Renewable Resource Alternative Energy Resource Wind Wind Energy Sunlight Solar energy Flowing water Hydroelectric energy Water Geothermal Energy Picture How does the resource create energy? Blades of a wind turbine convert moving air, called wind, into a spinning motion that spins the turbine. The turbine spins a magnet inside a coil of wire to produce electricity. Mirrors focus the sun’s rays to heat water tanks. The water boils to make steam. The steam is then used to generate electricity A dam holds water back creating a reservoir or lake. The intake gate opens and gravity pulls the water through the penstock. The water strikes and turns large blades of the turbine which powers the generator. The generators make electricity. Hot water is pumped from deep underground through a well under high pressure. When the water reaches the surface, the pressure is dropped, which causes the water to turn into steam. The steam spins a turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity. The steam cools off in a cooling tower and condenses back to water. The cooled water is pumped back into the Earth to begin the process continues to repeat again. Crops Biofuels Wood can be burned directly as fuel. Starchy crops like corn, sugar cane can be ground down to make alcohol which is added to gasoline to make the fuel gasohol. Use bacteria that produce methane gas by breaking down biomass. This gas can heat buildings. Soybeans can produce oil which can produce the fuel biodiesel.
