**Last Spring a bill was passed that postponed the mathematics portion of the WASL as a
graduation requirement until the graduation class of 2013. However, in order to graduate
from high school any student that does not pass the mathematics portion of the WASL must
continue to take and pass mathematics classes or they will not graduate from high school.
Another way to put this is, if you do not pass the WASL before graduating high school, then
you MUST PASS THIS CLASS TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL.
This course will consist of the content that the 10th grade WASL exam is based on.
 Number Sense
 Probability & Statistics
 Algebraic Sense
 Solves Problems and Reasons Logically
 Measurement
 Communicates Understanding
 Geometric Sense
 Makes Connections

Mathematics Department Shared Expectations for 2006-2007

There are to be no personal listening devices or cell phones in the classroom.
Electronic devices, such as game boys, calculator games, etc., are not allowed.
The wearing of hats, hoods, sunglasses or any such item is not acceptable in class.
Cards, dice, and other games are not allowed unless part of a class activity.
Students are responsible for getting their work in on time when they miss class.
Calculators: Students are highly encouraged to have a Texas Instruments graphing
calculator (TI-83+, or TI-84 series) for use in the classroom and doing homework. It
is not necessary to get a “silver” edition, however you may if you wish. I know these
can be expensive, usually around $60-100, however, they are a good investment for
future math/business/science classes and college. If you absolutely cannot afford
one, please let me know as soon as possible. We have a very limited supply that can be
checked out from the library if necessary. It is NOT recommended that you buy the
TI-85, TI-86, or TI-89. There is also a small amount that can be checked out for inclass use only for an annual battery fee of $3.00.
Calculators are merely tools for people. They are not “smart”, they will not think for you, but they will
make YOUR thinking and decision making easier, more efficient, and more accurate. You must
understand that you are expected to:
 Know when it is appropriate to use a calculator and when it is not.
 Show the work for all your mathematics problems, not just answers.
 Be able to explain HOW you got an answer to a problem, not just what buttons you pushed.
Grading: Your semester grade will be based on the following distribution:
Participation 20%: These points can be earned by being in class and learning math each day. Absences
(excused or unexcused) will result in an inopportunity to receive these points. Tardies, excessive
bathroom use, or a lack of participation in class will also result in an inopportunity to receive these
points.
Activities: 20%: These points will be graded on completion, effort, shown work and writing. These
activities will not be graded on correctness.
Assessments 60%: Assessments will resemble WASL-type questions and will be graded accordingly.
This class will be a Pass/Fail Class
P
60% - 100%
F
0% - 59%
***You must receive a 60% to receive credit.
Getting Help: There are many opportunities to get help in this class. Please seek help when you feel
you need it. Math Tutoring is available in the library on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays
after school until 4:00. (An academic activity bus is available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays).
Tardy/Absence Policy: Will follow the school policy
1st Unexcused tardy = Warning
2nd Unexcused tardy = Detention with Mr. Nelson for 30 minutes and a call home.
3rd Unexcused tardy = 1 hour of Work Study and a call home.
5th Unexcused tardy = Administrative Referral
If you are more than 10 minutes late for class it is an Unexcused Absence (Truancy).
