SGA Minutes – December 1st, 2009 5:30pm; SLC Lecture Room I. Meeting called to order by Rachel Pastorek at 5:34 pm. a. Rachel has started getting emails from administration about the Copping Award nominations. This award recognizes outstanding faculty in both the Basic & Clinical Sciences. Nomination Letters must be submitted via your respective Class President. Nominations will be collected early in the spring semester; more details will follow via email. b. Overview of SGA Accomplishments for the Fall Semester: i. First off, thanks to all the members of the SGA Executive Board for their hard work in accomplishing so much this past semester. ii. Successful Back To School party at Generations Hall iii. Catering food at all the meetings iv. DePaul Clothing and magazine Drive in the fall v. Revamping the SLE Committee including new bylaws vi. Tiger Run planning underway vii. Transition to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Insurance Plan viii. Organized SGA budget – able to secure a new microwave for the student lounge ix. Organized SAR mail slots x. Weekly announcements with organization information and meetings xi. Intramurals activity – flag football and new addition ping pong xii. Lot of work with Student Technology Fee xiii. Initiated work on SGA website hopefully debuted next semester xiv. New color printers xv. Transition L1 officers xvi. L4s 1. Match preparations and venue decision coming xvii. L3s 1. Improvements in radiology and opthamology course xviii. L2s 1. Released new website 2. Successful orientation a. There is a possibility of a change in the date for Family Day. ii. February 20th – American Student Government Association (Leadership Conference in New Orleans) 1. Rachel Pastorek and/or Ryan Vega will send an email to gauge student interest in participation in this conference 2. Possibility that school level dues paid by SGA or by school 3. Individuals need to register themselves 4. Students from all over the country come, but in New Orleans so LSU involvement would be nice 5. www.asgaonline.com Rachel Pastorek (for Stephanie Bourque – Community VP) i. SLE committee is meeting this Wednesday, December 2nd 1. They will vote/review recently submitted proposals. 2. They will also continue to work on the SLE website. ii. Lisa Dang– Social VP i. January 16th – Dirty Doctors and Ambulance Chasers 1. LSU Med, Tulane Law, Loyola Law, & Tulane Law 2. Republic January 16th 3. Free admission with voluntary donation to tiger run ii. SGA sponsored fundraiser for Tiger run – more details to come next semester iii. February 27th – There will be a joint community service event & after party with Tulane Med through Habitat for Humanity Rachel Pastorek (for Jay Hubert– Student Health VP) i. PALS work to come next semester ii. Working on discount at local dentist Jamie O’Neal – Treasurer Kevin Gipson – Technology Chair i. At the beginning of the semester, Kevin’s goals to get web presence for SGA and class websites. Hopefully that goal will be realized by the Spring Semester. ii. Working on 3rd and 4th year rotation scheduling software using some Technology Committee Funding. Options currently being discussed with administration. iii. Next semester soccer, tennis, and volleyball will happen ii. Plan to stick with list server email system for those interested 1. Softball and basketball will definitely be happening 1. Basketball indoor possibly earlier in the spring 2. Softball later in the spring when it warms up iv. USMLE Step 1 Forum – scheduled for Tuesday, January 12th (noon-1:30PM) 1. 3 part forum: a. Statistics & Important Information to Know b. Professor & Administration feedback on exam c. 3rd year Advice for Step 1 Preparation 2. Survey sent out to Class of 2011 to help give feedback on their preparation process. Survey closes on December 25th. L3s please fill out this survey to help your fellow colleagues. 3. L2 Coordinators: Ariana Beck (L2 Technology Coordinator), Lena Al-dujaili (AMA President), & Ben Kurz (Organization of Student Representatives to the AAMC) ii. Hoping to address student lounge issues/concerns over Christmas Holidays. iii. With new development website up on LSUHSC servers, we hope to have 2012 class website transferred over to LSUHSC hosting upon return for spring semester iv. Student Lounge – addressing current issues including cleanliness. On January 4th, the L2 executive board will clean out the Student Lounge. ALL personal items will be removed on this date. Don’t leave any personal items in the lounge over the Christmas break! l. Renford Cindass – L1 President i. L1 Executive Officers have transitioned into their position. ii. Currently finishing up the 3rd block on abdomen and lower extremity. Finals are scheduled for December 16th & 17th. iii. 3rd Block Mock practical scheduled for Wednesday, December 9th. iv. Cadaver Memorial scheduled for Friday, December 11th. v. Camp Tiger Committee Chairs should be picked in next 2 weeks, so they can start working over the Christmas Holiday. vi. Cadaver ball is tentatively scheduled for April 17th. vii. Planning to select members of the Orientation Committee first thing next semester. III. Student Affairs a. From Rachel Pastorek, thanks to all members of Student Affairs office for all their hard work. Gift for all b. Ms. Bobbie: i. L2s need to continue to register for the USMLE Step 1. ii. USMLE Step 2 CS – 1. Ten Juniors have dates on board websites. 2. All Juniors should sign up NOW iii. Matt Matherne - member of class of 2009 has been diagnosed with Pick Disease. Rapid Degenerative Disease. Youngest person ever diagnosed by Mayo Clinic. 5K Walk is currently being planned possibly for January. Jay Huber and Ms. Bobbie will email with more details. Looking for large student body participation in this fundraiser. Insurance was dropped. Family is trying to get Medicaid, but currently all his care is out of pocket; especially for 24 hour sitter care. c. Dr. Delcarpio i. All student organizations must submit their informational packets about governance and finance. Dr. Delcarpio will be contacting those people who need to make any changes soon. ii. LCME site accreditation went very well. Thanks to all the students who participated. iii. All Senior Dean’s letters were all submitted on time. IV. Danielle O’Banion – Homeless Clinics a. Memoranda of Understanding have been completed and signed by both of the homeless shelters and Chancellor Hollier. Meeting with Dr. Fontenot and shelter representatives in two weeks to establish a definite start date and make plans for restarting the clinics. b. Clinics will begin again in January. c. REMEMBER: Supply Drive for the Homeless Shelters is going on until December 4th. Seeking hygiene items such as soap, LOTION, etc. NO RAZORS. Used sheets, pillowcases, and towels are being accepted as well as NEW underwear, especially large sizes. Also accepting donations, make checks payable to “LSUHSC Foundation”. All donations are to be deposited in the boxes that are in the MEB lobby, between the first and second year lecture halls. V. Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) – Katherine Faust (AOA LA-Beta Vice President) a. The National Alpha Omega Alpha organization offers up to $2000 towards the establishment of a medical student service project that benefits the medical school or local community. b. The deadline for submission is December 31, 2009. Proposed projects must be new and have the potential to generate future support from other sources within two years. To submit an application, please provide (in no more than 2 single-spaced pages) an explanation of the project’s goals and objectives as well as a proposed budget with plans for evaluation. One proposal will be selected by our AOA Chapter's Councilor and the Office of the Dean to be submitted to the AOA national office. They plan to make this selection by January 31, 2010.
