Micro-Teach Activity
Year-1
“Learning-centered is a performance, outcome, and evidence-driven philosophy that asks what
students will learn and how one can determine whether the desired learning has taken place”
(O’Banion, 1997).
“Active learning engages students in the process of learning through activities and/or
discussion in class, as opposed to passively listening to an expert. It emphasizes higher-order
thinking and often involves group work” (Bhatia, 2014).
Purpose: The purpose of the micro-teach is to explore Learning-Centered Teaching Strategies in
a safe and supportive environment. You will receive feedback from your colleagues that you
can use to improve your practice.
Preparation Before Micro-Teach Activity
Step 1: Attend LCTS2224 Interactive Lecture and LCTS 2111 Cooperative Learning in the
College Classroom with Dr. Susan Ledlow.
Step 2: Choose two of the following workshops:
o LCTS 2222 Case-based Teaching
o LCTS 3184 Write to Learn
o LCTS 3181 Asking the Right Questions
o INDV 7311 Creating a Safe Space for Dialogue
Step 3: Take notes in your workbook about each of the above workshops you attended.
Write about which specific active learning techniques you have not previously utilized but
would like to employ with your students. These notes will help you as you prepare for the
Micro-Teach and the Micro-Teach/LCTS reflection in your AMP.
Step 4: Design an 8-10 minute Micro-Teach that
a. Uses an active learning technique that you have never tried
b. Adapts or adopts one of the activities from the workshops
c. Engages your colleagues in active learning (as if they were your students)
Tips:



Don’t try to cover a full class in 8-10 minutes.
If needed, you may take one minute to contextualize the activity.
The students (colleagues) should be actively learning for at least 7-9 minutes.
Step 5: Complete Micro-Teach lesson plan.
Step 6: Present Micro-Teach lesson to TLA colleagues and facilitators.
Step 7: Complete a written reflection about your LCTS and Micro-Teach experience on
Analysis of My Practice (AMP) form.
