LET Minutes Wed., Sept. 14, 2005 West Campus, 6-202 Present: Linda Anthon, Nick Bekas, Kira Bishop, Philip Bishop, Melody BoeringerHartnup, Mike Bosley, Jenny Britton, Helen Clarke, Judi Delisle, Aida Diaz, Suzette Dohany, Kurt Ewen, Emily Hooker, Celine Kavalec-Miller, Maryke Lee, Patrick Nellis, Mary Pepe, Melissa Pedone, Julie Phelps, Ann Puyana, Cheryl Robinson, Allison, Sloan, Roberta Vandermast Regrets: Louise Pitts, David Rogers, Sharon Wyly Agreements The following items were agreed upon at the conclusion of the meeting. The first THINK workshops will NOT take place on Oct. 4 and 6. The Workshop Planning/Assessment Curriculum work group and Gathering Evidence work group will create the calendar of events as they plan activities. There will be two sets of THINK workshops. The primary goal of the Assessment Series is to develop a team of evaluators trained to score student work using the holistic scoring rubric. (This series should be completed by the end of spring 2006.) The primary goal of the Gathering Evidence Series is to engage faculty in generating student work which may be used as evidence of Valencia’s Think competency. (This series should be completed by the end of fall 2005). We recognized that a significant LET goal is to grow into the ability to assess more diverse student artifacts with our assessment processes. However, we will continue to move forward with the holistic training for more traditional “written word” artifacts until we are more experienced with the process. Team MBTI The team discussed the strengths and weaknesses of our MBTI group profile (ENFP). Natural strengths of our team include: brainstorming, considering diverse opinions, questioning assumptions, open to new ideas, good energy, vision, and a sense of humor. Natural weaknesses of our team include: talking things to death, ignoring major facts, changing our minds too often, loosing track of what was decided, and ineffective lines of communication. The following resolutions were generated to help us work effectively as an ENFP group. Work deliberately to be inclusive. An example of this would be to vote on decisions at the next meeting to allow introverts more time to process and provide input (unless an external deadline makes this impossible). Practice engaged listening. Communicate more effectively outside of the group. Track decisions and accomplishments and report them regularly to the LET. Consciously consult and attend to input from our 3 sensing members. Principles, Goals, and Priorities LET goals and principles were discussed briefly and will need to be revisited on a regular basis to guide our work. We will go over the goals in more detail in our next meeting. A minor revision was made to our principles and procedures for productive work sessions. Calendar We agreed to invite Kaye Walter to our next LET meeting. The calendar of meetings was reviewed. We agreed that Oct. 4 and 6 had too many possible conflicts with faculty schedules and will postpone those workshops to later dates to be determined by work teams. Assessment consultant Chuck Walker will be speaking with LET members on Nov. 3,10am-12pm, East Campus, room TBA. Contact Celine Kavalec-Miller with questions about his visit. Work Groups LET members signed up to work on the following work groups. If you have not yet joined a work group, please let Melissa or Emily know which group you would like to join. LET Publication Group: Melody Boeringer-Hartnup, Allison Sloan, Roberta Vandermast Clearing House Group: Judi Delisle, Ann Puyana, Roberta Vandermast Workshop Planning/Assessment Curriculum Group: Linda Anthon, Nick Bekas, Kira Bishop, Mike Bosley, Jenny Britton, Celine Kavalec-Miller, Pat Nellis, Julie Phelps Gathering Evidence Group: Linda Anthon, Maryke Lee, Melissa Pedone, Julie Phelps Writing Contest Group: Nick Bekas, Jenny Britton Marketing Group: Mike Bosley, Mary Pepe Planning Team for Year of Communicate: Melody Boeringer-Hartnup, Helen Clarke, Aida Diaz, Suzette Dohany, Kurt Ewen, Pat Nellis LET Year of THINK Materials Notepads with mini versions of the THINK rubric will be created to use as favors for faculty and staff who attend LET workshops. The THINK rulers have a web link for students to access to self-assess their critical thinking skills. Students who take the selfassessment can print a personalized response if they desire or to turn into a teacher as an assignment. We should encourage our students to take the self-assessment to generate a baseline for students’ perceptions of their critical thinking skills. Learning Day The John Tagg session at Learning Day is full. Pat Nellis will try to get the session moved to a larger room to accommodate more participants. Suzette, Kira, Philip, and Linda will promote future LET events in their Learning Day session. Work teams should provide them with as much information as possible prior to Learning Day. Next LET Meeting* Wed., Oct. 12, 2005 2:30pm-4:30pm West Campus, 6-202 *Work teams should create their own meeting schedule.
