It is important that we understand how our work should be integrated into current assessment efforts at the institution. We will invite Jared Graber to a future meeting to help us understand the departmental assessment planning process. The LET supported the concept of an organizational redesign of our working processes based on Kurt Ewen’s proposed “option 2.” We will continue to develop this idea in future meetings. Our charge as a committee may evolve over the next several months as institutional assessment processes change, but the LET will remain committed to the assessment of TVCA as our primary work. The planning team for the Year of Communicate received LET support of their plan to develop an instrument to evaluate the communicate competency from existing measures of assessment at the institution. Continued Dialog with Kaye Walter Emily and Melissa met with Kaye Walter to discuss possible revisions to the original LET charge. This will likely happen as the institution seeks to build better connections in its assessment systems. Dr. Walter suggested we invited Dr. Graber to a future LET meeting to learn more about existing departmental assessment plans. She requested two specific things from the LET. 1. That we provide a timeline to her (short term and long term) to plant ideas and get faculty and staff in touch with assessment plans. 2. That we pull together more evidence (beyond the rubric projects) for the end of year THINK report. LET Organizational Redesign Kurt Ewen presented current and optional models for LET operational models. We discussed in depte the need to create an induction process for new members and to develop work teams with strategic overlap was discussed in depth. The team felt that “option 2” would be the most efficient operational model in the future and agreed to revisit this model in the future to add more detail. Work Team Reports Planning for COMMUNICATE Team The team plans to gather methods of assessment from current common course outlines that are linked to communicate in the Course Outline Builder. They will also look at existing measures of assessment at the institution to develop an institutional instrument to assess the communicate competency. The work team received the endorsement of the LET to continue in this direction. Workshop Planning Team/Gathering Evidence Team Members of the two teams met to select anchor papers to be used in future holistic scoring workshops. Sets of anchor papers were found for a variety of disciplines. A schedule of workshops and guidelines for workshop leaders needs to be set for the spring 2006 semester. As a reminder, a summary timeline is below. Jan. 2006 Advertise Year of THINK faculty development program and assessment project to recruit participants Feb 2006 Rubric and Thinkability workshops Mar/Apr 2006 Faculty participants implement thinkability assignments and score using rubric. April 2006 Faculty participants meet in focus group to discuss rubric and process. Class sets of scored student work submitted to the LET. Summer 2006 Interdisciplinary teams conduct holistic scoring on the submissions and debrief that process. Deans are informed of assessment process, outcomes, and how departmental assessment plans might include LET work. Recommendations are made from lessons learned for the Year of COMMUNICATE.
