CLASS TITLE: RESEARCH ANALYST – Student Success and Support
Programs and Services
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general supervision of the Dean of Admissions and Student Support, perform
complex analytical, statistical, and programming tasks required for the provision of information
on Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) and Equity to the college community via
written reports, tables, graphics, oral presentations, and a variety of computer-mediated formats.
Collaborate with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and external agencies on research
projects for planning, decision-making, evaluation, and accountability.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Design research studies related to equity and Student Success and Support Programs
and services that focus on best practices and tracking of cohorts of students to
understand the impact of SSSP services. (E)
2. Extract, verify, compile and format data from college databases and other sources for
planning, decision-making, evaluation, and accountability purposes on student success
and equity. Analyze data for trends, perform statistical analyses, and prepare
comprehensive reports, including local and online presentations. [E]
3.
Develop, analyze and create reports of key performance indicators that can be used to
track the success of support programs (E)
4.
Collaborate with Academic Information Services (AIS) to develop and implement clientserver and web-based delivery of information to college faculty, staff, students, and
external clients.

Use qualitative and quantitative data to develop student profiles, including
longitudinal/tracking studies. [E]
6.
Develop and maintain a collection of data and reports to evaluate and support the impact
of services such as placement tests, education plans, orientations, and counselor
meetings. Develop and maintain a collection of data to support data integrity, and state
and federal reporting requirements. [E]
7.
Perform statistical analyses, both descriptive and inferential, using appropriate software
packages. (E)
8.
Provide support, technical assistance, and consultation related to research reports, data
analysis, surveys, and special research projects to administrators, faculty, staff, students,
community members, and external agencies.
9.
Prepare written reports with accompanying tabular, graphic, and statistical contents,
descriptions of analytical methods used, and narrative of results and conclusions. (E)
10.
Participate in the design, administration, results compilation, analysis, and report
preparation for surveys and other types of research projects as it relates to SSSP and
equity reports and plans. (E)

Assist in the interpretation and use of program review data as well as student services
learning outcomes, service area outcomes and administrative unit outcomes.
12.
Assist in the implementation of research based studies to the college and inclusion of
relevant student support and equity data to help departments meet their program
missions and the mission of the college.
13.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:

Research designs, methods, analyses and reporting.
Statistical, spreadsheet, word processing, and graphics software.
Computer databases, knowledgebases, data dictionaries, file handling procedures, client-serverand web-based computer systems and applications.
Data extraction, query, analysis and formatting software.
Programming languages and a variety of computer tools.
Data warehousing principles and methods.
Office practices, procedures and equipment including recordkeeping techniques.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.

Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws.
ABILITY TO:
Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in
a variety of procedural situations.
Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer and appropriate software.
Design and implement research projects.
Use a database dictionary and understand complex database structures to deliver information in
a variety of formats to users of varying levels of skill with computer applications.
Learn and apply graphical user interfaces (GUI), structured query language (SQL), and other
programming and database tools to provide effective access to and presentation of
community college-related information.
Detect errors in data and program structure, logic, and coding.
Work independently with little direction.
Make appropriate decisions regarding data manipulation and data confidentiality.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Initiate, organize, and manage project timelines and meet deadlines while balancing competing
demands for research projects.
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
ethnic and disability issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree in Computer Science,
Statistics, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology or a related field with an emphasis on computer
science/programming, research methods, or data analysis and two years of closely related work

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Not assigned permanent staff to supervise. Provides work direction to student workers and/or
temporary staff.
CONTACTS:
Co-workers, administrators, faculty, students, public, staff in Chancellors Office, staff at other
community colleges and external agencies.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and/or stooping; occasional light
lifting, carrying pulling and/or pushing of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; frequent and
repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety
of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions
and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals from diverse
backgrounds on a regular on-going bases; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple
tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily busy office environment; subject to frequent contacts with and interruptions by
individuals in person or by phone; may be required to work during day and/or evening hours,
including occasional weekends on an as-needed basis.
