CLASS TITLE:
CUSTODIAN
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Facilities or other assigned supervisor, maintain an
assigned group of classrooms, rest rooms, offices and related facilities in a clean and orderly
manner; perform a variety of diverse duties in cleaning and maintaining facilities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Sweep, scrub, mop, and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets in
classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; wash windows, chalkboards and
walls; strip, wax and buff floors. (E)
2.
Dust, polish and disinfect counters, student desks, teacher’s stations, file cabinets and
bookcases. (E)
3.
Empty and clean waste receptacles and pencil sharpeners; pick up paper; pick up trash
containers and empty into large bins. (E)
4.
Clean rest rooms including floors, walls, fixtures, appliances and mirrors; restock
supplies; polish metal fixtures. (E)
5.
Move furniture and equipment; set up cafeteria and rooms for special events and
meetings; set up stage for concerts, lectures and other events. (E)
6.
Perform minor non-technical repairs to buildings and fixtures; replace fluorescent light
tubes; clean and adjust shades and blinds; adjust desks and other furniture; report other
repair and maintenance needs and assist others in making repairs as required.
7.
Turn lights on and off; unlock and lock doors and gates.
8.
Clean drinking fountains; make emergency clean-ups in classrooms. (E)
9.
Pick up or deliver supplies as directed.
10.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Basic requirements for the safe maintenance of College facilities.

ABILITY TO:
Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in
a variety of procedural situations.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards.
Learn and apply knowledge of schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used
in custodial work.
Maintain tools and equipment assigned in clean working order and provide proper security.
Perform minor, non-technical repair.
Observe and report need for maintenance and repair.
Communicate effectively with others.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Work as a member of a team.
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
ethnic and disability issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and one year closely
related work experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license. District-approved DMV driving record.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Not applicable.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate to heavy physical labor including frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of
objects weighing up to 75 pounds; frequent to constant walking, standing, bending, kneeling and
stooping while cleaning, moving furniture or equipment, etc.; repetitive use of upper extremities
on a regular basis; ability to operate electric cart to travel and/or pick-up/deliver supplies to a
variety of locations on campus; subject to occasional travel to various District locations to work.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other individuals from diverse
backgrounds; ability to personally interact and communicate appropriately with students, staff
and/or faculty on a regular, on-going basis; ability to effectively work alone or as a crew member
on a variety of assigned tasks while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in indoor environment with limited exposure to inclement weather during travel
to and from assigned work areas; work while wearing personal protection equipment; exposure
to fumes from commercial cleaning products and noise from vacuums and other cleaning
equipment; may be required to work at any district location during day and/or evening hours
including weekends and/or holidays on an as-needed basis.
