E&A Minutes 3-24-14

 Meeting is called to order at 5:32 PM

 Quorum is established with 8 voting members

 Motion to table minutes from previous meeting. Second. Minutes tabled

 Guest speaker: Carlo Fassi – Rally and tally on Wednesday. If this bill goes through senate it would save a student 300-375 a semester regarding out of state tuition. The governor is supporting but it is a whole other branch. We need as many students there as possible. There are excuses for class, discuss with professors for missing class or postponing a test/quiz. There is no reason to not be at this event. Online voting: I would hope that this group would pass changes that will allow online voting. IF there is anything we can do to encourage voting for students we should take those opportunities.

More students supporting our goals and priorities.

 Chair Report: 2 appointees, last meeting we had a good discussion on title 6 and online voting. I asked you guys to read up on other schools and their voting systems.

 Old Business: None

 Appointments:

Chase Baker: Student senator for about 1 year and also an RA and would love to be appointed for another term. Due to technicalities for wanting to join Engineering chair I would need to be re appointed for another chance of holding a general seat again on senate. Spends about 5 hours a week for student government between reading bills and going to meetings.

Motion to approve Chase Baker. Second. Roll Call Vote. Motion Passes 8-0

Emily Antwurth: Junior/Senior. Majoring in Media Production. Serving as

E&A chairman. Would like to continue to work on online voting bill with whoever the next chairman for E&A would be, also would like to work on a new point system. Would like to have a chair position but unsure which one yet. To receive signatures I approached different groups on campus.

Motion to approve Emily Antwurth. Second. Roll Call Vote. Motion Passes

8-0.

New Business:

Motion to suspend Roberts Rules. Second.

University of Florida does not use online voting; they have a good enough voting turn out.

University of Miami started mobile voting and voting increased by 4%

USF just finished their voting and should be getting back to me this week on how they run their elections.

Discussion of “link to vote” discrepancies.

How to define Polling Stations: President Fassi thinks there should be polling stations and phones/electronics are not considered polling stations.

At Florida State University they have a line that only allows each computer to vote 4 times.

Clemson: Not allowed to send out emails. Not sure how they track it but assures that students cannot send out links to everyone.

There is only so much the government can do to support voter turn out; most has to do with the candidates themselves.

Extremely difficult to get people to run in the elections. If anyone has any ideas on how to get people to run and join this organization please contact me or your next E&A chairman.

Our student government is the most compensated student government in this state from top to bottom.

Do you think students are threatened to run for/against a party that is seen to be monopolized throughout this system/school.

Students are turned off by student government simply because one party has been around for so long that gives off a vibe that others do not have a chance.

There has been a theory to change the parties name every 2 years, not to say that those same people cannot run together but they must run again under a different name to not tarnish one parties name for a long period of time.

With the re naming theory, it allows parties to realize that if they do not agree with their party they know that it will be re run in two years and can decide to make their own party if they want and run against the other parties.

Regarding online voting, it seems that many people are very hesitant. –

Everyone has their own opinion/vote, it is based on what everyone individually wants not just one person, everyone can voice their own opinion.

Online voting is a good idea, however, I do not think it is the right time. We are unable to utilize it to its fullest ability. Although online voting is the way to go and should be used when they time is right and we can fully utilize its capabilities in the future.

Chris Brady recommends for E&A to come to a vote to either move on with discussion of online voting or not, this discussion has been bouncing around my whole term and people are becoming frustrated with no movement in the matter.

Vote on whether we are ready to move on with online voting at this moment in time. 8 No’s. 1 Yes.
