Self-determination
Self-determination is the process of identifying, planning and achieving goals in life. Students who develop self-determination link their interests to their goals, make plans for the future, are aware of and use their strengths and weaknesses. An important part of selfdetermination is ‘disclosure’ of your disability, both to yourself and to other people. This unit will help you to begin thinking about the path to self-determination.

Do you make lists of things you need to do or want to achieve?
Are you comfortable with naming and describing your disability?
Have you talked about your diagnosis with anyone?
Do you understand the content of your specialist / psychologist report?
Write a couple of paragraphs about your disability and the good and bad ways it affects your life
Now edit this essay into a much shorter and more precise version that you might be able to ‘speak’.
