Notes
Mission Statement: Raising Expectations to Improve Education
2010 Goal: Teacher Morale/Retention
Co-Chairs: Daina Howell/Kelly Grady
Attendees: Kelly Grady, Daina Howell, Jennifer Ingram, Merle Kenady, Sue Kenady, Erin
McCaskill, Van Wilson, Chris Brierton, Rachel Saxer, Jori Bottorff, Angela Salrin
Hornet T-shirt Quilt Raffle - Kelly:
−
−
We made a profit of $593 with the quilt raffle.
Tracy Fuqua won the quilt.
Flu Shots - Kelly:
−
−
−
−
−
−
−
We had the flu shot clinic and 63 teachers attended.
United Way paid for $25/shot and the teachers paid $5/shot.
If we want to have the BC Public Health Dept. provide the flu shot clinic next year we
have to let them know now how many vaccines to order.
The Public Health Dept. would be $5 higher ($35/shot).
With the Public Health Dept. if we don’t use the vaccines we have ordered, we still have
to pay for them.
Moreland & Devitt can provide the flu shot clinic next year as well. They just need a
head count a couple of months ahead of time.
It was decided we would not have the Public Health Dept. provide the flu shot clinic next
year.
February Fling - Kelly:
−
Jean is getting the frames for the prize display.
−
−
−
−
−
−
−
Jeff Kassing agreed to DJ.
Focus on Results will provide some funding for prizes. We do not know how much yet.
United Way accepted our funding request. They were appreciative of us trying to
become self-sufficient.
The date of the event is Feb. 26, 2011 starting at 5:30 or 6 pm to 10 pm.
Erin has secured the date with Country Inn & Suites.
It was discussed when asking for donations from businesses to wait until the first of the
New Year. This is when they have the most funding available.
Daina, Mary and Chris are on the prize committee.
Action Steps –
− We need to go ahead and start working on February Fling stuff, don’t wait.
− Need to ask Alan Koch if he will MC.
− Erin will get the contract from Country Inn & Suites.
PTO – Jennifer/Erin:
−
−
−
−
The PTO start up meeting will be in January 2011.
We already have a couple of requests from teachers to have the PTO help with events.
However these requests are for event before the PTO will be set up.
Event 1: Book Fair at BCMS. Dec. 13-17, during the day and 1 or 2 evenings. They are
asking the PTO to staff the Book Fair. For right our group will help out.
Event 2: Reading Strategies Meetings at the YMCA from 6:30-7:30 Nov. 11 for Pre K –
K students, Nov. 30 for 3-4 grade students and Dec. 9 for 1-2 grade students. We are
being asked to provide child care service to the parents attending the meetings.
Structured activities will be provided for the kids and they need volunteers to help with
the activities. Need 4-5 volunteers a night. Could ask high school students to help as
part of the Ready for Work, Ready for College program. There would need to be at least
1-2 adults present each night though.
 Erin asked for volunteers at the meeting and received the following; Nov. 30 –
Daina, Kelly and Angela, Dec. 9 – Chris
Action Steps –
− Jennifer and Erin will advertise the first PTO meeting.
− Jennifer and Erin will send out an email about the PTO meeting to those who have
signed up to participate in the PTO, those who have helped in the past and the
teachers.
− Jori will help Jennifer with staffing the Book Fair.
− Jennifer will send out an email asking for help with the Book Fair.
− Erin will send out an email asking for help with the child care at the Reading
Strategies Meetings.
− Jennifer and Van will contact Lindsay Aldridge, BCHS guidance counselor, to see if
any high school students would want to help with the child care at the Reading
Strategies Meetings.
− Erin will let Angela know if more volunteers are needed for the Reading Strategies
Meetings. If so, we could get Dot volunteers to help out.
Parent/Teacher Conference Meals - Erin:
−
−
−
−
−
−
There was not a lot of excess food leftover, which is good.
Had great help and a good turnout, no complaints.
Soup night went over very well.
It was a struggle to get food donated though.
Next P/T Conferences are March 16 and 17 for the public schools.
St. Mary’s P/T Conferences are Nov. 9 and 10. Kristy Buss use to take care of the
meals; however we no longer have her as a contact.
Action Steps –
− Jennifer will contact Ann to see what needs to be done for the meals during the St.
Mary’s P/T Conferences.
Fundraising Ideas –
− Hornet logo ornaments. Glass ball ornaments with Hornet logo and “BC Hornets”
wording. Jori designed the ornament. Are we interested in it? There is a minimum
order of 50. Cost is $300 for 100 with shipping; $3/each and sell for $10. We cannot
personalize them. We could sell the ornaments at home basketball games and send
order forms home from school with students.
− Window clings, topic was tabled.
Action Steps –
− Jori will get with Jeanne to get Hornet logo.
− Jori will go forward with ordering the ornaments.
− Need volunteers to help sell the ornaments at 3 home boys’ basketball games and 3
home girls’ basketball games.
Brainstorm Ideas for 2011 Goals – Kelly:
− The following are the goal ideas we have;
 Extra-curricular non-sports activities
 Academic recognition
 Teacher recognition
 Building Beautification
 Parental Involvement/Community communication
− Building beautification for the schools. Chad does the maintenance and up-keep of the
school buildings. He could also use volunteers to help. It was decided this is a project
and not a goal.
− Extra-curricular non-sports activities; examples are giving out awards and recognizing
students for accomplishments and having a small awards ceremony for students who
excel.
− We received approval from Van and Merle to move forward with the academic
recognition.
− Our major goal is Academic/Teacher Recognition and our minor goal is support extracurricular non-sports activities.
Action Steps –
−
The principals from each school will create a list of what recognition is being done
now for the students.
Misc:
− Mr. Phil Conover, the Dean of JWCC Workforce Development Center, was present for
our meeting. Mr. Conover shared we are moving in the right direction compared to what
other schools are doing. He briefly discussed district wide strategic plans focusing on
priorities and developing a 5 year plan. Mr. Conover also shared with us some student
recognition ideas he has seen, such as, elementary school students having lunch with
the guidance counselor or principal. Could start with having the students voluntarily sign
up for these lunches.
