Editorially Revised 3-22-06 University Curriculum Committee Course Proposal Form for Courses Numbered 0001 – 4999 (Faculty Senate Resolution #04–18, April 2004) Note: Before completing this form, please read the accompanying instructions carefully. 1. Course Prefix and Number: ICEE 3024 2. Date: 10/06/06 3. Requested Action (check only one box): X New Course Revision of Active Course Revision & Unbanking of a Banked Course Renumbering of an Existing Course from # to # 4. Justification for new course or course revision or renumbering: This curriculum change is a part of a revision of the engineering program to achieve several goals: 1) more closely align content with general engineering programs; 2) adjust the timing and coverage of materials to support success in the fundamentals of engineering exam; 3) adjust the sequence of science, mathematics, and engineering courses to better integrate the content. These changes have been developed and approved by the department faculty and have been endorsed by the Engineering Advisory Board. 5. Course description exactly as it should appear in the next catalog: 3024 Mechanics of Materials (3) (WI) (F) 2 hours lecture and 2 hours lab per week. P: ICEE 2020, ICEE 2070. Behavior of deformable bodies subjected to axial loading, torsion, and bending. Includes stress-strain relations, elastic deflections of beams, effects of combined loading, buckling of slender columns, and failure criteria for ductile and brittle materials. 6. If this is a course revision, briefly describe the requested change: 7. Undergraduate Catalog Page Number from current undergraduate catalog: 295 8. The Writing Across the Curriculum Committee must approve Writing Intensive 2 (WI) credit for all courses prior to their consideration by the UCC. If WI credit is requested, has this course been approved for Writing Intensive (WI) credit? Yes No X If Yes, will all sections be Writing Intensive (yes/no)? Yes No X 9. Any course requesting Foundations Curriculum credit must be reviewed by Academic Standards Committee prior to their consideration by the UCC. If FC credit has been approved by the ASC, then check the appropriate box (check at most one), otherwise leave all boxes blank. English (EN) Humanities (HU) Fine Arts (FA) Health (HL) 10. ICEE 3024: Mechanics of Materials Required Texts: 1. Mechanics of Materials, Sixth Edition, R.C. Hibbeler, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2005. ISBN 0-13-191345 2. Fundamental Of Engineering Supplied-Reference Handbook (p) NCEES, 7th edition, National Council Of Examiners , ISBN: 1-932613-19-6 Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students shall be able to: Analyze relationships between stress, strain and displacement in deformable bodies. Find the stress state of bodies subjected to axial, torsional, transverse, and/or bending loads. Find the displacements of bodies subjected to axial, torsional, and/or bending loads. Transform plane stresses into a different coordinate system Find principal stresses for a state of plane stress. Describe widely used failure theories for ductile and brittle materials. Find the stability limits of members subjected to axial compressive loads. Conduct experiments involving load, deflection, and/or strain measurements, analyze experimental data, and write concise laboratory reports. Topics Covered in this Course: Topics covered in this course include: Review: Rigid-Body Equilibrium External and Internal Forces Stress, Strain, and Deformation: Axial Loading Torsion Shear and Bending Moment Diagrams Tensile testing Shear stresses in bonded joints Stresses in beams Beam Deflections Combined Loading Failure Criterion Column Buckling Compression testing Buckling of thin rods Flexural testing Grading Policy and Assignments: Students will be evaluated based on the combination of class activities (see below). The final grade will be assessed with the following criteria: A B C D F Grading 90% or better 80% or better 70% or better 60% or better Less than 60% Assessment Homework Lab Reports Exam #1 Exam #2 Final Exam 20 15 20 20 25
