The meeting was called to order by Yolanda Ramil, Chair of the WEC.

Time l:05 p.m. Dorothy expressed the need to look at the first paragraph of the minutes regarding the topic of reorganization of offices spaces for faculty. In the second half of the paragraph requires clarification. Maria

Fenyes explained the proper content to read: “Yolanda Ramil reported that her discussion with Dr. Barerra regarding reorganization of the present cubicle system can be corrected at some future date when full time faculty will have “real” offices. At that time faculty offices can be designed to accommodate two instructors and function as secure, locked and private offices.”

The minutes were then accepted as corrected.

OLD BUSINESS

The question was raised about the need to have basement bathrooms in the

Campus Center Building properly cleaned. Julius Walker reported a custodian is now assigned to that task..

The question of installing new carpets in the Instructional Building was reviewed. Maury Pearl reported this project is under the auspices of the

Campus Improvement Committee.

1

Julius Walker reported that more “No Smoking” signs have been placed at strategic locations on campus. When Smoking Areas are selected, furniture and cigarette disposal units will be made available.

Pat Flood reminded the committee that office space cubicles designated for adjunct faculty do not have computers. Maria Fenyes stated it is a violation of the AFT Contract to fail to provide a computer in any cubicle to be used for office hours by adjunct instructors. Cubicle 20 and 21 still need such computers.

NEW BUSINESS

A list of nine work environmental needs were submitted by Stan Levine and placed on the Work Environment Agenda under New Business. All the items pertain to the TCR in the LRC. Below is a summary of these items regrouped according to progress and status:

1: No custodial services. DONE

8: Whiteboard not properly maintained DONE

2.

Room left unlocked.

3.

Equipment cabinet left unlocked.

4.

Equipment left on.

REPORT ITEMS 2, 3, AND 4

TO DEPARTMENT CHAIR.

5. Clock is hidden by a screen and it makes noise.

6. Chairs incompatible with desk.

7.

High desks difficult for students to use.

And 9. Some of the light dimmers for the room lights are wearing out and work only intermittently. JULIUS WALKER OF

PLANT FACILITIES WILL

FOLLOW UP ON THESE.

OTHER BUSINESS

Debby Wong inquired about having storage cabinets put in her bungalow classroom in order to have the convenience of storing supplies and classwork sheets at the bungalow instead of bringing them from her office each time. She understands that the bungalows are temporary especially with the new parking structure to be built on that part of the campus.

Having a storage cabinet will be helpful.

2

Harlan Goldberg submitted a report (copy for each person) regarding Room

Assignments.

It was decided to Table this concern for the next meeting, which will be in

September. However discussion and comments were brought out regarding the feasibility of this request. Basically, Department Chair, John Morales indicated the request pertained to his department and he would like to review the report. Maria Fenyes indicated that Nery Ocasio is handling the room assignments. Dr. Martha Soto of course is also closely involved. Maria

Fenyes advised that room assignments be made between two departments chairs. The concept would be to have one department maximize the use of designated room and the other department minimize the use of the room thus achieving full use of each classroom. Then other teaching needs such as teaching aids, A-V equipment and storage can be arranged to meet the needs of the two disciplines. This approach has been tried in the Natural Sciences

Dept. It has served as an efficient plan with maximum efficiency of equipment, classroom use and least diversity of disciplines.

Offering a classroom assignment plan to Nery Ocasio may be welcome and actually assist Nery as she processes room scheduling.

In order to facilitate the corrections needed for the Theater Center Room,

Lorraine Manoogian suggested that new chairs be brought into the amphitheater room that suit the height of the counters and the walking space behind the chairs. The crowded and somewhat uncomfortable chair/desk alignment can be corrected in this way. Maria Fenyes said that there is some money still available from the Block Grant that is enough to make that kind of changes. Julius Walker would be following up on this as a solution to

Item 7 of the list of needs submitted by Stan Levine for the TCR. Maria suggested to Julius that he study some catalogs that carry suitable chairs to fit into the given space and that are comfortable when used with the counters.

OTHER OLD BUSINESS

Maury Pearl asked for information on some old business. In particular, the office cubicle of Lilamani de Silva had materials belonging to Charles Dirks.

How has that been resolved?

Julius Walker has the work request necessary to investigate this situation.

3

The double doors leading into the faculty offices from the cafeteria is now working better.

Cadets still come on duty between 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday to

Thursday. When a Cadet is on duty in the offices, at least one set of the double doors must remain unlocked during that time period to allow access to students and faculty.

Maria Fenyes offered Best Wishes and Congratulations to Yolanda Ramil for seven years of distinguished service as Chair of the WEC. Thank you very much.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 P.M
