Bachelor in Science (Midwifery) Dear Midwifery Student, We are delighted that you have accepted a place on the 4 year Bachelor in Science (Midwifery) degree programme beginning in September 2014. This programme will be delivered in partnership with our two linked midwifery and maternity care providers, The Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital and The Rotunda Hospital. Your course will begin Monday 15th September 2014 (Full time) and you are required to attend the School of Nursing & Midwifery, 24 D’Olier Street, Dublin 2, at 09.00. During this week, you will be required to attend everyday either in the School of Nursing and Midwifery or your allocated hospital for orientation and registration. There may be a 08.00 start on Tuesday 16th September 2014 in your allocated hospital. Formal teaching will commence on Monday the 22nd September 2014. Please bring the following with you: 1. Birth Certificate An original copy of birth certificate, which will not be returned to you or a notarised copy of birth certificate, which is a photocopy of the original birth certificate signed by a Garda or a Solicitor known to you. If you have changed your name on marriage, please bring a notarised copy of your marriage registration. 2. Garda Vetting procedure Staff and students with access to or working in the Health Services are required to undergo Garda clearance procedures. The vetting procedure is in place to protect clients of the health service providers. It is essential that on the first day (15th September 2014) you bring with you a list of all addresses in Ireland or abroad where you are or have been resident at any time in the past (from birth), as these will be required to fill in the Garda Vetting Form. I. Irish Nationals If you have lived outside of the Republic of Ireland for 6 or more consecutive months, police clearance will also be required from the country from which you resided. II. Non Irish Nationals Police clearance will also be required from your country of birth and other countries of residence of 6 or more consecutive months (if applicable). You should contact the relevant authorities immediately to obtain this additional police clearance. Note to all students, there may be a small cost, which you have to meet, when vetting for periods you may have lived abroad. The following enclosed forms must be completed and returned by the relevant date (see below) to the address outlined below. 1. Hospital Allocation Selection Form You have applied for a Midwifery degree programme in Trinity College Dublin, but as of yet you have not been allocated to one of the two linked hospitals, The Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital or The Rotunda Hospital. This form allows you to state your preference for either hospital. Please note it may not be possible for you to be allocated to your preferred hospital as a strict quota applies, in which case you will be allocated to your second choice. Allocation to hospitals are made on a first come first served basis, so it is important that you fully complete and return all required forms as soon as possible. 2. Self Declaration Form The Self Declaration form seeks information on the student’s suitability for practice element of the programme. This form is particularly important for Health Service Providers as they must ensure their clients’ safety at all times. Students will also be required to complete a Garda Vetting Form on their first day. 3. Confidential Health Self-Declaration Form The Confidential Health Self-Declaration form is designed to allow you to identify any health issues that may impact on your programme. It is in your best interest to identify any physical or mental health conditions that may later have an impact on your ability to satisfactorily complete the theory and practice element of the programme. If you received an offer in Round A (reply date July 10th) forms must be returned on or before the 1st September 2014. Note: Offers received in Round 2 and thereafter, please reply as soon as possible upon receipt of your orientation pack. All offers of admission are subject to satisfactory completion of required forms. Students will not be permitted to register until all forms have been received and reviewed by the School of Nursing and Midwifery TCD. PROFILE OF THE HEALTH SERVICE PROVIDERS The Coombe Women and Infants’ University Hospital The Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, located in Dublin, Ireland, was established in 1826. This hospital is a voluntary teaching hospital with national, regional and area responsibilities for ensuring the optimal health of women and their babies within maternity, neonatal and gynaecological services. It is also a national tertiary referral centre for specialised services which include fetal medicine, neonatal and maternal care and gynaecology. Today, over 8,000 women give birth each year in The Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital and it has distinguished itself as a world-class centre provide care for women and babies. There are many services provided by midwives at The Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital and these services are being expanded. Women, who have given birth and are within an identified catchment area, can avail of the Early Transfer Home (ETH), Community Midwifery Service. This service enables women to leave the hospital within a short time following an uncomplicated birth. Midwives also provide antenatal care in special midwife clinics within the hospital and in outlying clinics in places such as Naas and Tallaght. The hospital currently provides a midwifery pre-registration education programme (18 months, post RGN) and the Bachelor in Science (Midwifery) with Trinity College Dublin. The Rotunda Hospital The Rotunda Hospital, located close to the city centre, was founded in 1745 and has been providing maternity services to women and their families since its foundation. Each year approximately 7000 women give birth in this hospital. The hospital provides a range of maternity, neonatal and gynaecological services across the three levels of care: primary, secondary and tertiary. It is also a voluntary, teaching hospital that is a referral centre with national, regional and area responsibilities. It is the hospital’s policy to provide the highest quality of care to all women and babies. There are many services provided by midwives at The Rotunda Hospital. There is a DOMINO (Domiciliary In and Out) and Early Transfer Home (ETH) Community Midwifery Service. This is midwifery led care for pregnant women. The team of midwives provide community based antenatal care, care during labour and birth in the hospital and postnatal care in the woman’s home. ETH is an early transfer home service available to local women who wish to leave the hospital within a short period following an uncomplicated birth. Midwives also provide antenatal care in special midwife clinics within the hospital and in outlying clinics in places such as Blanchardstown and Swords. Midwifery Education has been offered in the Rotunda Hospital since 1773. It was the first hospital in Ireland, and one of the first in Europe to offer a formal midwifery education programme. Since 1997, the hospital has provided a midwifery pre-registration education programme in partnership with Trinity College Dublin and now also provides the Bachelor in Science (Midwifery).
