1. Middle Ages- Began after the Roman Empire collapsed.
2. Church- Unified the people, provided order and education.
3. Feudalism- Social class system in the Middle Ages. Your social class was determined
from birth and the amount of land you owned. Land was exchanged for Military
service/loyalty.
4. Religious Themes- Life, music, art, architecture in the Middle Ages revolved around
religion.
5. Crusades- A series of wars that lasted about 200 years. The Christians tried to regain
the Holy Land (Jerusalem) from the Muslims.
6. Charlemagne- created an empire during a time of much warfare and fighting,
encouraged education, spread the Christian religion throughout much of Western Europe
and Asia
7. Peasants/Serfs- Bound to the land. Feudal system depended on this social class and
their hard work/labor.
8. Manorialism- Middle Ages economy and land was most important commodity.
9. Self-Sufficient- Needing no outside help. Manors were self-sufficient. Life was too
dangerous to travel in the Middle Ages so manors became self-sufficient.
10. Gothic Architecture- Stained glass windows, taller larger cathedrals.
11. Long Term Results of the Crusades- Revival of learning, decline of feudalism,
cultural interaction with Middle East. Cultural diffusion increased.
12. The Crusades were one of History’s “most successful failures”- The Christians did
not achieve their goals, but the fighting brought about many desirable changes in
Europe.
