Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art AR529 Advanced Surface Design New I. Catalog Description and Credit Hours: a. This course expands and develops surface design of fabrics for the advanced student so that multiple fiber techniques and media allow for personal expression. 3 credit hours Prerequisites: AR330, AR434 (Introduction to Surface Design) or consent of the Instructor II. Purposes of the Course: a. Build on basic knowledge of fabrics and dyes b. Learn batik, repeat pattern registered silk screen, textile pigments, embellishments and layering of design c. Develop individual expression of personal subject matter through works in fabrics and with dyes in a variety of techniques d. Create a surface design portfolio of artwork with complex media and techniques III. Expectations of the Students: a. Attend all demonstrations and critical assessments of creative projects b. Complete all written and oral research reports c. Complete all creative projects according to guidelines by the due date d. Explore media and methods with curiosity and creative problem solving e. Produce original work f. Participate in the collaborative and collective learning environment of the studio g. Employ safety and good health practices h.
