WOW Game Title: Cone Crazy Content Area: Science TEKS Focus: Earth’s Surface Changes through Processes of Construction and Destruction Physical Education Unit: Locomotor, Physical Fitness Grade: 5 Resource: CATCH Activity Box 3-5 (modified by Pat Werner and Aimee Edwards) Equipment/Materials: 1 cone for every 2 students Set Up: Cones are scattered throughout the activity area. Divide the class into two groups. Designate one group the “Oceanic Plate” the other “Continental Plate.” Activity: On signal, all students begin moving throughout the activity area, (jog, gallop, skip, hop, jump, slide, etc.) Oceanic Plate students move around play area gently knocking over the cones, moving down under the Continental Plate while Continental Plate students simultaneously move through the area setting the cones back up, or being pushed up to create hill/mountains. Switch roles after 2-3 minutes. Variations: Change the way the students are moving through out the play area, jog, gallop, skip, hop, jump, slide, leap, etc. Review Questions Skill focus: What can you do to improve your cardiovascular performance? (jog, power walk, play soccer) Academic focus: Which type of plate moves upward to create hills/mountains?
