On May 14, 1948 the "Palestinian" Jews finally declared their own State of Israel and became "Israelis." On the next day, seven neighboring Arab armies... Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Yemen... invaded Israel. Most of the Arabs living within the boundaries of the newly declared "ISRAEL" were encouraged to leave by the invading Arab armies to facilitate the slaughter of the Jews and were promised to be given all Jewish property after the victorious Arab armies won the war. The truth is that most of the Arab Palestinians who left in 1948 – between 400,000 to 500,000 – never saw an Israeli soldier! They did not flee because they feared Jews, but because of a rational and reasonable calculus: the Jews will be exterminated; we will get out of the way while that messy and dangerous business goes forward, and we will return afterwards to reclaim our homes, and to inherit those nice Jewish properties as well. They guessed wrong; and the Arab Palestinians are still tortured by the residual shame of their flight. So much for the blatant lie about Jews throwing out all the [Palestinian] Arabs! Israel survived despite a 1% loss of its entire population! Those Arabs who did not flee 11 became Israeli-Arab citizens. Those who fled are still called and artificially maintained as "Palestinian Arab refugees" 1948: ARAB INVASION (WAR OF INDEPENDENCE) ARMISTICE (1949) – 900,000 PALESTINIAN REFUGEES – NOT ALLOWED TO RETURN – REFUGEE CAMPS Israel possessed more land than the U.N. partition had given it. 12 13 ARAB – ISRAELI CONFLICTS 1956: SUEZ WAR (Israel returns captured land) 1967: SIX-DAY WAR – ISRAEL GAINS CONTROL OF: – GAZA STRIP – SINAI PENINSULA – WEST BANK OF THE RIVER JORDAN – EAST SECTOR OF JERUSALEM – GOLAN HEIGHTS IN SYRIA 1973: YOM KIPPUR WAR – ISRAEL THROWN BACK INITIALLY – – AURA OF ISRAELI INVINCIBILITY OVERCOME 14 15 16 OCCUPIED TERRITORIES •Golan Heights •West Bank •Gaza Strip 17 ISRAEL Blue triangles = Israeli settlements in the West Bank The West Bank Likelihood of a 100% pullout of the Israeli security presence? Peace talks ended for all practical purposes in 2001-2002 – outlook is bleak. 18 STRUGGLE FOR JERUSALEM HOLY TO JEWS, CHRISTIANS, AND MUSLIMS JUDAISM: CAPITAL OF JEWISH KINGDOM 3000 YEARS BP; FAITH TOOK FORM IN THE FIRST TEMPLE-DESTROYED BY BABYLONIANS IN 586 BC; REBUILT AS SECOND TEMPLE-DESTROYED BY ROMANS IN AD 70 – Wailing Wall is all that is left ISLAM: PROPHET MUHAMMAD ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN 7TH CENTURY AD (Dome of the Rock site) CHRISTIANITY: BASED ON THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS CHRIST; CRUXIFICTION & ASCENT – Many sites in Jerusalem are considered sacred by Christians 19 STRUGGLE FOR JERUSALEM (CONTINUED) 1947- UNITED NATIONS DID NOT INCLUDE JERUSALEM AS PART OF ISRAEL 1947- PALESTINE PARTITION RESOLUTION DESIGNATED JERUSALEM AS AN “OPEN CITY” 1948-49- WAR AND TRANSFER OF ISRAELI GOVERNMENT FROM TEL AVIV TO JERUSALEM 1967- WAR AND AFTERMATH CHANGED BOUNDARIES AGAIN 1980- JERUSALEM REAFFIRMED AS THE CAPITAL OF ISRAEL SUGGESTION FOR AN INTERNATIONAL, OPEN CITY 20 WITH ACCESS TO ALL HOLY SITES REJECTED 2 State Solution Seems Less and Less possible. 21 JERUSALEM 22 CULTURAL DIVERSITY E.J. Muslims want access to their holy places in Jerusalem, as do Christians Both sides “pay back” violence with 30 violence and escalate the problem Evil of Terrorism Palestinian suicide bombers kill Israelis indiscriminately and so do Israeli retaliatory strikes at the 31 Palestinians. The victims of terrorism could be Arab Palestinians or Israeli Jews – both sides have done terrible things in the name of their God 32 33 34 Negotiation Difficulties Can they get over hating each other?
