Project 1 Part 2 - Installing Microsoft Server 2008 Using Server Manager.
Due with Project 1 Part 1 – Monday 9/20 at the beginning of class
Objectives:


Share resources and then share resource with another machine.
You will complete some basic file sharing and see the difference between the file share
security and the windows security.
Book references: The reading for this project is found in Chapter 2, sections 2.3 – 2.5.
Lab activities:
1) Set up a clone virtual machine on Oracle VirtualBox



Open a Windows Explorer window and find your VirtualBox .vdi file.
o You can find the location of your .vdi file by doing the following:
 Open VirtualBox, making sure your virtual machine name (WS2008-1) is
selected in the left panel, and then clicking on the header “Storage” in the
right panel. This will bring up the Settings window for storage.
 In the Storage Tree panel in the middle of the window, you will see a
SATA Controller item with the name of your .vdi file underneath. Click on
that filename. The right side will change.
 You will see a dropdown menu beside the label “Hard Disk”, and a yellow
folder icon to the right of the dropdown. Click on that folder. That will
open the Virtual Media Manager window.
 In the Virtual Media Manager window, you will see your .vdi file under the
Hard Disks tab. Highlight that file and below it you will see the location on
your hard disk where that file can be found.
Once you know the location of the file, go there and make a copy of that file, simply
using copy/paste, calling the new file WS2008-2.
You cannot simply use this new copy in VirtualBox, since each virtual machine file has a
special UUID number associated with it. This new file has the exact same UUID as the
file that it is a copy of. You must now change the UUID in order to use this as a clone
virtual machine.
1
o

Open a Command Prompt at this location (right click on the folder to find that
option, or type “command” into the Run dialog box and cd into that folder) and
type the following command:
 VBoxManage internalcommands setvdiuuid “WS2008-1.vdi”
o When this command finishes running, your new .vdi file will be able to be used as
a clone machine. Do the following:
 Go back into VirtualBox and create a new machine (Click on New).
 Click Next to get to the Create New Virtual Machine window. Give the
name WS2008-2, and the Version Windows 2008.
 Again allocate 1024MB of memory, and click Next.
 Choose “Use existing hard disk”, and click Next twice, and click Finish.
o At this point you will have two virtual machines that you can start simultaneously.
o NOTE: You may have to reinstall Guest Additions for the second virtual machine
in order to get your mouse working easily between the two machines when they
are running simultaneously.
Before continuing to work on your virtual machines, go back to the VirtualBox main
windows, and for each of your virtual machines, highlight the machine name in the left
panel and select the “Network” header in the right panel (you’ll have to scroll down to
find it).
o Change the “Attached to” dropdown list and choose Bridged Adapter.
 This is so that the two virtual machines will be able to see each other on
the network, which will allow for sharing resources, which is what you are
about to do.
2) Follow the instructions in the sections indicated to manage users, and to share resources
between these two computers.
NOTE: Before doing this, you must change
Written Assignment:
1) Take a moment to scan the information found at the following link. You don’t have to
read the whole thing, but I think you’ll get the point of what they are trying to say:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc264456.aspx
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_cracking
Why is It necessary to be this strict about passwords on a server? What ways do people
try to crack passwords in order to break into computer systems?
