January 2016
Welcome
Welcome to Inside St John’s, bringing
you the latest news from St John’s
Hospital in Livingston.
Paediatric Review
The review of acute paediatric care in
NHS Lothian is now underway and
patients, families, carers and staff are
being asked for their views.
The review comes after NHS Lothian
asked the Royal College of Paediatrics
and Child Health (RCPCH) to conduct an
independent review of hospital services
for children.
An online survey has been launched and
can be accessed here.
NMC Revalidation Update
The NMC has written and/or e-mailed all
nurses and midwives on the register to
inform them of the changes to
revalidation and all information is
available on their website.
The NHS Lothian Revalidation Helpline is
now open on ext. 35546 (0131 465 5546)
so that staff with concerns or those with a
question can call and talk things through.
The helpline will be available between
9am and 3pm, Monday to Friday, except
public holidays. At other times you can
leave a message and someone will call
you back.
In addition, workshop sessions for those
who will be revalidating in the first
quarter, along with Confirmers’ sessions,
are being set up at various venues. Dates
for these will be available on the NHS
Lothian NMC Revalidation page on the
intranet.
Improving efficiency and
productivity
If you have an idea on how to improve
efficiency and productivity within your
own service, or if you can see
unnecessary waste in another service, let
us know. The Efficiency and Productivity
Team is launching a new way that you
can communicate your ideas for
improving how NHS Lothian uses its
resources.
Visit the intranet and provide your
efficiency ideas by completing the form
provided. Click submit and the form will
be sent automatically to the Efficiency
and Productivity Team, who will then
review the suggestions and forward them
on to the relevant team/service for
comment. The form allows you to remain
anonymous if you wish, while also
providing the opportunity to hear
feedback for your suggestion.
As NHS Lothian plans how to tackle the
issues facing the services our patients
rely on, the need for new ideas for
improving efficiencies has never been
greater. NHS Lothian needs help from
people working in the service to meet the
challenges facing us in 2016/17.
We need new ideas on how to improve
quality, reduce waste and improve
efficiency, while ensuring our patients still
receive the excellent care they come to
expect from the services they use. For
more information, contact Lorna Seville at
lorna.seville@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk

Clinical Change Forum
The team has started training medical
staff in Head & Neck wards with the aim
that they will go-live in mid-February.
This will complete the main phases of
work for the time being at SJH. The main
remaining work is clerking and progress
notes for:
The next dates for events in the series of
Clinical Change Forum meetings are:
14 March, 17 March and 29 March 2016.

Winter Planning – flu clinics
There is still time to get a flu jab. Getting
vaccinated is the best way to protect
patients, the community, yourself and
your family from this potentially serious,
preventable disease.
If you’ve not managed to have a flu jab,
but would still like one, please email the
most appropriate flu mailbox address
below and an appointment will be
arranged for you:
Flu, Hospitals
Flu, East and Midlothian, CHP
Flu, Edinburgh CHP
Flu, WestLothianCHP
Don’t delay. Be prepared and protect
yourself.
Trakcare Paper Lite Programme
Training staff in electronic clerking and
progress notes has been the main focus
of work over the last couple of months
and the following areas are now using
Trak as below:

Head and Neck (Burns Unit; Ward
18; Ward 19A) – nursing admissions
and progress notes

Observation Ward – medical and
nursing admissions and progress
notes for medical patients
Medical boarders transferred to
surgical areas
(Gynaecology/Obstetrics ward/Head &
Neck) in SJH no longer need a Patient
Summary pdf document printed out,
as these patients will have their
progress notes continued on Trak.

Gynaecology: SJH gynaecology ward
will go live at the same time as
gynaecology at the RIE, for which the
current timescale is 2017.

Surgical patients (elective and
emergency): a surgical solution is
being discussed across Lothian, so
implementation timescales will be
confirmed once a solution is agreed.
