Practice Hours
The practice is open from 8.00am – 6.00 pm Monday to Friday. Morning surgeries
run from 8am or 8.30am – 10.30am. There is then a break for coffee and practice
discussion, followed by house calls and/or on the day appointments. Afternoon
surgeries run from 2.00pm – 4.30pm, 3.00-5.30pm or 3.30 – 6.00pm
Our GP’s carry out a mixture of early and late surgeries, and carry out the duty doctor
function on a rota basis. The partners take part in the Extended Hours service, and
either start at 7:30 or finish at 18:30 on their “Extended Hours” day.
Practice List
The list size is currently 13,800 patients, in a compact practice area covering the town
of Tranent and the villages of Macmerry and Elphinstone. The list size has grown
considerably over recent years due to several new housing developments. East
Lothian has the highest growth forecast of any area in Scotland, and the list size is
expected to increase further over the coming years. We are lead (and only) practice
responsible for 2 care homes in the area - 1 nursing home and 1 residential home.
Services
The practice predominantly provides service to the NHS with a GMS Contract, but
also carries out a small amount of private work. We achieve a consistently high
number of QOF points, and also take part in a full range of Enhanced Services.
Systems & Technology
Our main systems are Vision and DOCMAN. We have a record of innovation in the
use of medical technology, having been the first practice in the Lothians to install and
use a surgery POD (an automated blood pressure checking system) which has
carried out over 5000 checks in 18 months, and to utilize the Coaguchek blood testing
device for Warfarin patients (now being adopted across all East Lothian GP
practices). We have our own website (www.tranentmedicalpractice.co.uk) via which
patients can order repeat prescriptions and book their routine appointments on-line.
Future Developments
NHS Lothian is in the process of building an extension to Tranent Health Centre, and
this project is expected to complete in summer 2014. This will provide an additional 8
consulting rooms, which will allow for the expansion of the services provided at the
Health Centre. The practice embarked on QPA in the summer of 2012.
The practice currently trains 4th year undergraduates, and is also in the process of
being accredited as a Training Practice. One of our GP’s is undergoing the registrar
training course, and we expect to take on our first registrar in 2014.
Outpatient Facilities
Most of our referrals are made to the main hospital facilities in Edinburgh, but there
are also local services at Roodlands - a small district hospital in Haddington, five
miles from Tranent - which offers open access Radiology, Physiotherapy facilities and
a range of outpatient clinics - e.g. Diabetes, Cardiology, Gynaecology, and Surgery.
