COURSE DESCRIPTION:. This is a continuation of ESOL 0346. It is designed to further develop reading
comprehension skills and expand vocabulary. It provides practice in skills such as identifying main ideas and
supporting details, determining the sequences of events using context clues and drawing conclusions.
COURSE PREREQUISITE(S):
ESOL 0350 Advanced Intermediate Reading seeks to prepare students for college level academic or
workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:
The help students read more effectively in English by teaching them a variety of reading skills and strategies
which may include skimming, scanning, summarizing, finding the main idea and supporting details,
discovering word meanings (general as well as specific vocabulary words) through context clues, and
drawing conclusions.
To introduce students to a vocabulary of approximately 1,500- 2,000 words, and help students increase their
vocabulary through knowledge and understanding of word forms, prefixes and suffixes, and synonyms and
antonyms.
To expose students to a variety of reading sources which may include graded readers, computer reading
software, Internet sites aimed at general reading/vocabulary development, as well as extensive reading of
authentic English text through periodicals and books.
To help students improve their critical thinking skills by analyzing various facets of their readings including
understanding the author’s purpose and how the rhetorical styles are used in relation to this purpose
COURSE OUTCOMES:
After taking ESOL 0350, the student should be able to:
Read to read a variety of texts of lengths ranging from 500-1,500 words on subjects of general academic
interest.
Be able to read a short work of fiction or non fiction outside of class and report on it to the class.
Continue to develop basic reading skills: previewing, skimming, scanning, summarizing, determining
meaning from context, drawing conclusions.
Show familiarity with different rhetorical modes (e.g. process description, comparison/contrast, definition,
cause /effect) and how they are realized in a text.

CLASS POLICIES:
ATTENDANCE: You are expected to attend all your classes each semester We meet three times a week
which is five hours. There are NO EXCUSED absences, even if you are sick or must work. If you miss more
than 10 classes, you will lose 2 points from your final grade from every class missed thereafter. You must
complete all your work assignments and tests that you miss. If you stop coming to class, you must see a
counselor to drop your class before the drop deadline or you will receive an F ESL students must drop ALL
of their classes. CCQ may grant exceptions to this policy for special circumstances such as extraordinary
or prolonged illnesses and family emergencies. CCQ will not grant exceptions for work related absences..
TARDINESS: Please be on time for class. If you are more than 15 minutes late you will be marked absent
for that class hour..
MOBILE PHONES
You may not use mobile phones in class. Please turn them off and put them away while you are in class.
MOBILE PHONE CAMERAS and RECORDING DEVICES
You must get your teacher’s permission before recording or taping in the class. In any case, do not use a
mobile phone for that purpose.
MAKING UP MISSED TESTS OR ASSIGNMENTS: If you miss an in-class graded assignment, you must
make it up upon returning to school. The makeup should be scheduled within 3 days from the day the
student returns to class. Speak with your instructor to set a time.
CCQ POLICY STATEMENT: LATE ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments should be handed in at the time designated by the instructor. If the assignment is late 1 day,
10% will be deducted from the grade for that assignment; 2 days, 20%; 3 days, 30%. No late work will be
accepted after the 4th day.
ACADEMIC HONESTY AND CHEATING: You may not copy other people’s work. You may not copy work
from the internet. You may not work with others on assignments unless you receive permission from your
professor. You may study with others, but graded assignments must be your work exclusively. Violation
of this rule may cause you to lose some or all credit for the assignment, and even for the entire course.
CCQ GRADING SCALE:
100-90 is A; 89-80 is B; 79-70 is C; 69 or less is IP and this grade reflects that the student completed the
course, including the final, but didn’t pass. F is for students who did not complete the course.
