October 28, 2005 Report to the Congress

(chair), Barbara Meguro, Ruth Robison, Bill Sakai, Errol Yudko

Program Review:

VCAA Hora and the ASC have reviewed and revised the program review guidelines as requested by the Congress in Spring 2005. The more streamlined and tighter guidelines have been sent to departments undergoing self study this year and next and are being distributed to the Congress today.

The data tables proposed by the ASC in Spring 2005 are now considered resources for departments to use as needed to support specific points, such as the need for additional faculty to ensure that programs can be completed within four years, or, for students arriving with AAs in hand, within two years.

The ASC has met four times this semester, including one meeting with the chairs of Economics, Political Science, and History and one meeting with VCAA Hora.

At the meeting with department chairs, we solicited suggestions for making the program review process more manageable for departments and demonstrated how some of these tables might be incorporated into reports and acquainted departments with especially useful on-line UH system MAPS report.

As a result of these meetings, two points of the review process have been clarified: the VCAA’s office will cover the expenses of external reviews (travel, per diem, and honorarium), and the dean’s offices or division offices will assist departments with the travel arrangements. The points have been incorporated into the guidelines being distributed today.

Other projects:

The ASC will undertake to inform the university community about the ongoing results of the National Survey for Student Engagement, which has been administered for four years at UH Hilo, and about how these results can be used to strengthen courses and programs.

The ASC will update the 2001 campus Academic Assessment Plan.
