EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes October 6, 2008 Present: Martha Aaron, Stephanie Africano, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 8:30 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 2. Department Updates o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: Job training: an agreement with the City of Compton has been signed for Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) job training. The South Bay Workforce Investment Board has referred two individuals to our computer lab. The next STCW and Lifeboat classes are filled. November 3rd is the next Advanced Firefighting. Space is still available in this class. The Beverage Equipment Service Technician (BEST) program is offering a digital multimeter on-line class. It is a preliminary to the on-line class that will be offered in December. Angie Dimicco has been named the project coordinator for Key Train. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: A total of six El Camino and Compton instructors will received Robotics training for classes they will teaching in the spring. A field trip to JPL in Pasadena is being planned for El Camino College and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School students. Job Training: The Fastener Manufacturing classes being held at the El Camino College Compton Community Educational Center will start November 5th. It includes 320 training hours total, 8 weeks. Classroom instruction 5 days a week, 8am-5pm, includes paid internship. $12-$16 starting salary after training. Qualifications: 18 years of age or older, able to communicate in English, able to lift and carry 40 pounds, U.S. citizen or legal resident, and able to pass drug test. For information call: Cindy Lo at 562-860-2451, ext 2511. o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: The U.S. Customs Broker Exam Preparation Course is a success. There are a total of 25 people enrolled. It will be offered again in January 2009. CITD is partnering 1 with the National Freight Forwarder Association for this course. Maurice and Bronwen are currently attending a meeting related to the Business and International Education grant from the Department of Education. The Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) grant is underway. The International Business Practice Firm curriculum is being offered to local high schools and other CITDs. Support to Banning High School will continue with guest speakers. A push is being made to require prior registration for the Import/Export Orientations being offered. Jim Hoffman will be doing orientations, as well as, Bronwen and Maurice. They will be conducting orientations in Spanish for a fee. The second Nicaraguan delegation will be arriving on November 3rd. o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: The new workshop schedules for the winter session will be delivered this week. Star Van Buren is the interim director. Tom Niland is here to help prepare for the audit and help with the multitude of reporting requirements required by the Small Business Administration, Chancellor’s Office and the lead center in Long Beach. o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital: All ET-07 Employment Training Panel (ETP) classes have been completed. The closing audit for ET-07 will occur the week of October 13th. Cristallea Byun and Deborah Imonti will be going to Sacramento on October 17th to present the application for the next ETP contract. The City of Redondo Beach has chosen El Camino to do their second set of Customer Service workshops beginning October 20th. El Camino will have a booth at the (Professionals in Human Resources Association) PIHRA Conference and Exhibition on October 7th & 8th. o Community Education – Stephanie Africano: Participating in Northrop’s “Life Work Festival” to present Community Education programs. Working on proposals for Winter/Spring classes. Interviewing prospective instructors. o Workforce Development – Espie Corrado: Career Placement Services will have an Internship Fair on October 30th. Career and Technical Education (CTE) continues work on the CTE catalog. CTE had a very good meeting with Centinela Valley Union High School District CTE coordinator and as a result will be working very closely with her on Career Pathways. CTE has started to reply to “Prospected Students”. These are individuals who go to the ECC website and fill out the Prospect Form and indicate the programs that interest them. CTE emails a welcome letter and includes contact information for all CTE programs. They continue to visit the high schools. Karen Hess is working diligently collecting concurrent enrollment applications for the 2 Robotics Academy and Project Lead the Way classes. Women in Industry and Technology (WIT) was presented with a $5,000 check from Southern California Edison. WIT continues with their guest speakers and peer support meetings for their students. The WIT Advisory Board Meeting will be held October 16th and their Open House is scheduled for October 29th. VTEA surveys will be going out this week. Discussion o Streamlining processes and procedures: Darling would like to see LCD projectors mounted in the training rooms to avoid timely setups. Jose is hoping to migrate to a T-1 line or something better than a high speed DSL line for better service. o Update on multi-activity contracts: Jo Ann Higdon will present the revised contract to Dr. Fallo for approval. Other Issues LauraLee Garinger and Bobby Becka attended the Disaster Planning Conference in Anaheim on Wednesday, October 1st. The information provided helps prepare for many types of unforeseen disasters. Samples of useful items needed for disasters were given to participants. This is Accreditation week at El Camino College and Compton Center. There is a possibility that some of the accreditation team members may come to Hawthorne. The President’s Newsletter has pictures and bios of team members. The suggestion was made that the Holiday party be held on campus again this year.
