Department Updates
o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: Standards for
Training Certification and Watch Keeping (STCW) classes are doing very
well. Classes scheduled for November are Advanced Firefighting and STCW.
In December a Lifeboat class will be held on the 9th and an STCW class on the

The KeyTrain internet based program is available in the ECC Learning
Resource Center in the Schauerman Library upper level. A daily monitoring of
the WorkKeys website is being done to locate those who have taken and
passed the assessment tests. The Career Readiness Certificate Program has
awarded 667 certificates to those who have passed the assessment tests. 160
individuals with the certificates have gotten jobs. Solar power and wind
generating sub-grantee agreement with North Orange County provided
supplemental basic skills curriculum in math for heavy wind generation for the
technician program. In January Roberto Pandolfi will attend class to be
certified in solar power. The Workplace Learning Resource Center intends to
provide job training in that area. They are also putting on a Job Readiness
Academy for the Fastener program at Compton Center. The correctional
institution contracts will be awarded for January 2009. Currently Welding and
Parenting classes are at Terminal Island. We are waiting for award letters for a
Parenting class at LA Metro Detention Center and for AutoCAD at Terminal
Island and Victorville.

working on developing creative ideas, such as building objects with Legos, to
get the students to think about technical careers. We are currently applying for
a $2 million Department of Labor grant to support the Fastener program. This
will be a cooperative grant with the other CACTS, WIBs, and Compton, which

migrating to a T-1 or T-3 line or something better than a high speed DSL line
for better service.
2
o Update on multi-activity contracts: Approval for the multi-activity contracts
has been received.
o Holiday party – Only 10 individuals have responded to date. We may need to
make changes if we cannot reach the number required by the caterers.
o Everyone at the BTC has access to the copier in the Workroom by selecting the
address with BTC included.
o Safety Issues: There was a big confrontation on campus. This is a reminder
that you should not get involved and should call Campus Police or 911 for
help.
o Budget Updates: Figures released by the Governor state a significant budget
shortfall which will require budget cuts and potentially a 1½% increase in the
sales tax. There will be more cuts for the community colleges which will
trickle down to El Camino.
