EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes November 7, 2008 Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, Maricela Vital A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 8:30 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21. Review of Minutes from October 6, 2008 meeting o Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: Standards for Training Certification and Watch Keeping (STCW) classes are doing very well. Classes scheduled for November are Advanced Firefighting and STCW. In December a Lifeboat class will be held on the 9th and an STCW class on the 16th. The KeyTrain program was presented to the El Camino Interclub Council. The Career Skills contain five courses and the Career Clusters contain 16 Industry clusters and how they relate to career education programs. The KeyTrain internet based program is available in the ECC Learning Resource Center in the Schauerman Library upper level. A daily monitoring of the WorkKeys website is being done to locate those who have taken and passed the assessment tests. The Career Readiness Certificate Program has awarded 667 certificates to those who have passed the assessment tests. 160 individuals with the certificates have gotten jobs. Solar power and wind generating sub-grantee agreement with North Orange County provided supplemental basic skills curriculum in math for heavy wind generation for the technician program. In January Roberto Pandolfi will attend class to be certified in solar power. The Workplace Learning Resource Center intends to provide job training in that area. They are also putting on a Job Readiness Academy for the Fastener program at Compton Center. The correctional institution contracts will be awarded for January 2009. Currently Welding and Parenting classes are at Terminal Island. We are waiting for award letters for a Parenting class at LA Metro Detention Center and for AutoCAD at Terminal Island and Victorville. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia: The Fastener Manufacturing classes at the El Camino College Compton Community Educational Center started November 5 with 23 students. It includes 320 hours of training (195 hours of lecture/lab instruction, 96 hours of internships at partner companies, and 32 hours of job readiness). For 1 information call: Cindy Lo at 562-860-2451, ext 2511. In the process of closing out the following programs: WIRED 2.4 and 3.5, Honeywell RTF, and QuickStart. Plans have been finalized to implement the CTE Collaborative grant. El Camino will work with Compton and Cerritos to reach middle school students through campus visits, videos, and career day. The partners are working on developing creative ideas, such as building objects with Legos, to get the students to think about technical careers. We are currently applying for a $2 million Department of Labor grant to support the Fastener program. This will be a cooperative grant with the other CACTS, WIBs, and Compton, which will be the host site. We are working closely with ETP (Employment Training Panel) to continue with contract training and to develop a new engineering contract training program at the BTC. o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: The second Nicaraguan delegation has arrived and has been here one week. They will be departing Friday, November 14th. A Spanish Import/Export Seminar will be held on Wednesday, November 12th. The fee will be $15.00. A new U.S. Customs Broker Exam preparation course for February 2009 is in the planning stages. o Small Business Development Center – Star Van Buren will be the new SBDC Director beginning December 1st. SBDC is now preparing for the SBA Accreditation visit on November 18th. o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital: The new ET-09 Employment Training Panel (ETP) has started. The CAHSEE grant has been awarded and work is in progress to contact individuals who have not passed the high school exit exam. Target groups are Compton, Inglewood and Inglewood. The grant was awarded late but the end date was not extended. o Workforce Development – Espie Corrado: The All Campus Advisory Board Council Dinner is November 12th, from 5:00-7:00 p.m, in the East Dining Room. Career Placement Services reports during the month of October there were 319 job searches by students, 76 new job postings, 20 new employers and 7 students placed. Monitoring of VTEA fund allocations continues to insure we are on target. Discussion o Streamlining processes and procedures: LCD projectors will be mounted in the training rooms to avoid timely setups. Jose and John Wagstaff discussed migrating to a T-1 or T-3 line or something better than a high speed DSL line for better service. 2 o Update on multi-activity contracts: Approval for the multi-activity contracts has been received. o Holiday party – Only 10 individuals have responded to date. We may need to make changes if we cannot reach the number required by the caterers. o Everyone at the BTC has access to the copier in the Workroom by selecting the address with BTC included. o Safety Issues: There was a big confrontation on campus. This is a reminder that you should not get involved and should call Campus Police or 911 for help. o Budget Updates: Figures released by the Governor state a significant budget shortfall which will require budget cuts and potentially a 1½% increase in the sales tax. There will be more cuts for the community colleges which will trickle down to El Camino.
