EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes September 12, 2012 Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Alexis Estwick, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Alin Sanchez, and Traci Traina A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business Training Center in Room 21. Review of Minutes from May 9th meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Career Pathways: Alicia Zambrano: 1) Finished summer sessions with four classes; morning classes were high school students and the other class was a hybrid class of unemployed workers and students. One half of the participants took the NIMS certification and passed. After completion of the WIP (Workforce Innovation Partnership) Machine Tool Technology classes, we had a Job Fair and a mini graduation for completing the program. The morning session was set up for interviews with interested companies. The final outcome of the interviews will be shared at the next meeting. 2) For Fall we have the Machine Tool Technology for the CAA (Career Advancement Academy) program for the new cohort. Three classes, Machining, Math 12 and Career Orientation, will be offered. Blueprint Reading will be available for those scoring high in math. Eighteen to twenty-five students will be participating. 3) The IDRC (Industry Driven Regional Collaborative) grant (which may be moving into the H1B Technical Skills Training grant) currently has 35 students 4) The Robotics program started August 25th. We didn’t have to recruit this year because word of mouth was so strong. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies –Traci Traina/Darling Garcia: 1) North Orange RTF (Rapid Training Fund) and JDIF (Job Development Incentive Fund) grants: We continue to offer Professional Certification courses at the Business Training Center as well as Machine Tool Technology classes at both the Compton Center and El Camino College campuses. 2) National Science Foundation (NSF): The Principal Investigators (PI’s) will be attending the Advanced Technical Education NSF Conference in October. We will also have a booth promoting our program. The committee is currently writing a new NSF grant proposal to become an NSF Center funded grant. 3) H1B: Working with Cerritos College and North Orange County Community College District to train unemployed workers. 4) Training: Completed two 30 hour cohorts of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) for employees of Northrop Grumman. 5) Upcoming Classes: A 24-hour Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) will start on Saturday, September 15th and run for three consecutive Saturdays. Attendee will be taking the ASQ Certification Exam on Saturday, October 6th. A 30-hour Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT) course for Engineers of Northrop Grumman. Training will be held once a week from 9/19-11/21/12 at the Space Park facility. A 24-hour Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQE) course will be held on October 3-5, 2012 at the ECC Business Training Center. 1 o o o o o Center for International Trade Development – Maryann Cohan: 1) Currently working on Cleantech Trade Mission (October 30-November 11, 2012) and ECO Expo Asia (October 27-30). Community Education: 1) Fall 2012 Catalog is out. Professional Development info sessions so far: a) New Alcohol and Drug Counselor training program (Wednesday night) – great turn out for first info session. The training team leader, California Mind Institute’s Dr. Balaji Nettimi, PsyD (psychologist), lead the session. His passion and commitment to quality education in this subject matter was evident. Other instructors of the program include Dr. Beverly Lentz, PhD; Dr. Mark Ingram, PhD (psychological assistant) who practices in Torrance, Norma Keukellar, LAC (licensed acupuncturist), and Dr. Rosalia Koba, MFT, PhD (marriage and family therapist). b) Medical Coding and Billing (Saturday night) – 146 people RSVP’d, approximately 100 showed up. This will be the second series the incredibly popular instructor Dagmar Nelson will be teaching. The popularity of offering both a weekday evening and a Saturday morning class has proven extremely popular. 2) Winter/Spring 2013 Catalog: Working on Winter/Spring catalog/programs including Mother’s Day Tea (Tiki-themed this year) etc. Foster Care – Alexis Estwick: 1) Model Approaches-Partnerships (PS MAPP): Preparing for first cycle of four modules starting September 22nd. Pre-meet takes place on September 7th. Funding remains the same as last year. 2) YESS (Youth Empowerment Strategies for Success): Had a 6% increase in the budget. Current contract ends December 31st. It will go to June 2013. Preparing program for the future. For the second module money was cut back. ECC and Long Beach will do the module together. There will be five classes at each location. 3) Foster and Kinship Care Education (FKCE): Changing Student Learning Outcome so that it’s in compliance with what we want to teach. Have completed plan. There will be 137 hours of classes July through December. Classes such as Medical Fragile Children that link to certification are 4-8 hours. Will submit schedule for approval to be placed on-line. Classes start at the end of this month. Center for Customized Training (CCT) – not in attendance, everything about the same: Small Business Development Center – Laura Garinger: 1) Star Van Buren is in New Orleans, LA for the Annual ASBDC Conference. 2) Had to postpone our QuickBooks series that was to start on 9/11/12. It will begin October 2nd. 3) Our “How to Estimate Start-up Costs” workshop is gaining popularity. We had 19 people sign up Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: 1) Terminal Island: Meeting to discuss classes and start dates for classes. Wheelchair Repair class is starting August 28th; Blueprint Reading is starting on August 6th. AutoCad, Blueprint and Parenting will start in October. 2) Metropolitan Detention Center Parenting class on-going. 3) Maritime Training: Application was made to South Bay Workforce Investment Board to have STCW and Lifeboat classes combined as one enrollment. 4) Maritime Training Schedule: Lifeboat – October 8th, Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) – October 18th, Advanced Fire – Week of October 22nd, Tankerman – Week of October 29th, Disney Cruise Lines Personal Survival Training - September 13th through December 7th. 2 5) Computer Lab: Effective August 1st, Beverly Anthony will instruct classes for Business Entrepreneur Success Training (BEST) and other computer programs. Discussion o College Bond Measure: Measure E for $350 million will be on the November ballot. o Tax Initiative: Even if the tax doesn’t go through we won’t have furlough days. o New Vice President of Human Resources: Linda Beam has accepted the position that was temporarily being filled by Lynn Solomita. Other Issues The Project Specialist position that Kristie Adams left will be posted as a 10-month position rather than a 12-month position. Adjournment at 3:00 pm 3
