EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council July 23, 2014 Department Updates o Career Pathways – Megan Ruane: 1) Dual Enrollment: Setting up the dual enrollment classes in Datatel. Getting all of the contracts in order for fall 2014. Enrolling most of the high school dual enrollment students before fall 2014 begins. We will have over 40 sections of dual enrollment classes. Projected to have over 900 students. 2) CAA (Career Advancement Academy): Three cohorts – Welding, Machine Tool (working with South Bay Workforce Investment Board), and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Welding cohort is full. Machine Tool cohort, recruiting. ARC cohort – Half filled (had issues with linked classes in the beginning preventing students from enrolling). 3) START Program: Going well. We went to the California Science Center on July 18th. Going on a field trip to Northrup Grumman on July 25th. 4) Northrop Grumman Experience: Electronics class was held at Northrop Grumman facility. Eight students participated. Possibility of two getting hired as full time and five as contractors. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Traci Traina/Darling Garcia: Traci Traina 1) We have a couple of certification classes coming up. We’re going to do one CQE certification in September for Northrop Grumman and another one here in November at the BTC. 2) Waiting on word on our new NSF grant. Waiting for confirmation that we going to get it. 3) David is working with UCLA Extension Program to develop a manufacturing certificate with community colleges. They’re trying to put together a program where any student can go into any community college, get their units and certificate, and then take the certificate to UCLA Extension. Darling Garcia: 4) H1B class going on at Northrop right now. We have the WIB students and high school students taking manufacturing classes. 5) We writing reports and closing out the end of the year grants. o Center for Customized Training (CCT) – Maricela Vital: Employment Training Panel (ETP) 1) Basically continuing training and invoices. 2) Eldon is visiting with potential customers. There are things that are happening with ETP and the California Energy Commission. On AB 118 we have on-going training with Cerritos College. City College of San Francisco has a new person in place and they are doing training but not as much. 3) Dealing with training partners and some of their contracts. We need to increase their funds because they are doing more than anticipated. Contract Education Training: 1) City of Torrance is done with DDI (Development Dimensions International) training for now. They might do some in the fall. 2) Dealing with training partners and some of their contracts. o Grants – Jennifer Hutcherson: 1) We partnered on an H1B grant which was submitted through the CMTA. The grant includes industry partners such as Northrop Grumman, IBM and Chevron Products, the colleges: Cerritos, San Bernardino, Valley, Contra Costa and North Orange County. It provides education and on the job training and job placement services for the long term unemployed or under employed workers in manufacturing and information technology fields. We also partnered on a $10 million TAA grant with the Workforce Intermediary Growth Sector. This is Stephanie Rodriguez’s and she set it up with various workforce investment boards, college partners (San Jose City, Evergreen, Las Positas, Olone, Saddleback and Palomar) and employer partners (NASA, AIMS, JPL, Lawrence Livermore 1 National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkley Laboratory). The goal of the project is to develop integrated system of channeling students through engineering technology and information technology, to create career pathways for TAA impacted individuals. We’re not working on any grants right now that are going into application but we did get the TRIO support services renewed for this year and it was renewed at a higher funding this year because they had budget cuts last year. Working on the AB 86, Adult Education project program. The first report for that grant is due on July 31st. o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: 1) Kid’s College 2014: In progress. o Small Business Development Center – Laura Garinger: 1) Star Van Buren began the NxLevel training workshops at Terminal Island Prison on July 22nd. The workshops consist of 10 sessions (twice a week for 5 weeks) for inmates that are soon to be released. This will help those that are considering going into business for themselves and will give them valuable entrepreneurship knowledge and they will complete a business plan when the workshops are done. 2) Becki Walker, one of our experienced advisors, retired on June 30th. We are currently looking for a well-rounded business advisor that is experienced in business start-ups, marketing and financial analysis as well as business plans. 3) Star Van Buren is currently working on the proposal for our next year’s 2015 SBA grant. She is also working on a proposal to receive additional funding from the Economic Development Office of the Governor. 4) The SBDC continues to offer workshops to those that are starting a business and those that are in business. Some of the workshops remaining for July are: The Small Business Orientation, The Basics of Starting a Business and the Import Workshop, all offered on July 24th. 5) Nancy Cisneros and LauraLee Garinger attended the Connecting Women to Power Business Conference on June 20th. We were able to secure a table right outside of the conference rooms which allowed heavy traffic to our table. It was a tremendous networking opportunity and we had many visitors sign up for the SBDC services. Dan Hancuff our legal advisor was a panel speaker in one of the many workshops held that day and his speech on the services provided by the SBDC was well received. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: Cindy Pelayo will be leaving as she accepted a full-time position at another company. I will be filling out paperwork for a work study student to replace her. In the meantime, I would like Alin to help with phone calling and things like that. 1) Terminal Island: 5-Year Welding contract on-going to June 30, 2014 with instructor Henry Jackson. Final year for contract is October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015. 2) Parenting: 5-Year contract awarded. Class began April 1, 2014 with instructor Bobbie Lanham. Classes to resume on August 12th. We are waiting to get approval for a Blueprint for Success class at this prison. That will also include a Job Fair. We have a Welding contract that will start October 1st. 3) Job Fair will be August 13 and will be centered on interviewing the inmates. Blueprint for Success program - Denise DiPasquale will be prepping inmates for Job Fair. 4) Maritime Training: STCW-95: No fixed schedule yet. Waiting for ECC Pool and ECC Fire Academy to approve schedule. STCW (Standards for Training, Certification & Watchkeeping) class price increase of $50.00 to cover Fire Module for Basic and Advanced Firefighting. Lifeboat Class scheduled for August 11-16th. Advanced Fire is pending. Security Awareness for all Seafarers: class has been cancelled. Getting calls for Tankerman. Security Awareness for Seafarers (8 hour class) is July 28th. Discussion 1) New Developments: There’s about $50 million dollars coming down from the Chancellor’s Office and has to be used for CTE programs. Right now, as it stands, 40% will be competitive and 60% will be allocated to the 2 colleges proportional to their CTE student count. There will be potentially money if we want to apply. There’s another $250 Career Pathways trust coming down. Fiscally, it should be a good year. There’s another H1B coming out for apprenticeships. There are other federal grants for workforce development money that will be announced. 2) Annual Picnic: Let’s survey everybody and see the level of interest. 3
