field trip to Northrup Grumman on July 25th.
4) Northrop Grumman Experience: Electronics class was held at Northrop Grumman facility. Eight

Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Traci Traina/Darling Garcia:
Traci Traina
1) We have a couple of certification classes coming up. We’re going to do one CQE certification in
September for Northrop Grumman and another one here in November at the BTC.
2) Waiting on word on our new NSF grant. Waiting for confirmation that we going to get it.
3) David is working with UCLA Extension Program to develop a manufacturing certificate with
community colleges. They’re trying to put together a program where any student can go into any
community college, get their units and certificate, and then take the certificate to UCLA Extension.
Darling Garcia:
4) H1B class going on at Northrop right now. We have the WIB students and high school students
taking manufacturing classes.

California Energy Commission. On AB 118 we have on-going training with Cerritos College. City
College of San Francisco has a new person in place and they are doing training but not as much.
3) Dealing with training partners and some of their contracts. We need to increase their funds

They might do some in the fall.
2) Dealing with training partners and some of their contracts.
o
Grants – Jennifer Hutcherson:
1) We partnered on an H1B grant which was submitted through the CMTA. The grant includes
industry partners such as Northrop Grumman, IBM and Chevron Products, the colleges: Cerritos,
San Bernardino, Valley, Contra Costa and North Orange County. It provides education and on the
job training and job placement services for the long term unemployed or under employed workers in
manufacturing and information technology fields. We also partnered on a $10 million TAA grant
with the Workforce Intermediary Growth Sector. This is Stephanie Rodriguez’s and she set it up
with various workforce investment boards, college partners (San Jose City, Evergreen, Las Positas,
Olone, Saddleback and Palomar) and employer partners (NASA, AIMS, JPL, Lawrence Livermore
1
National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkley Laboratory). The goal of the project is to develop
integrated system of channeling students through engineering technology and information
technology, to create career pathways for TAA impacted individuals. We’re not working on any
grants right now that are going into application but we did get the TRIO support services renewed
for this year and it was renewed at a higher funding this year because they had budget cuts last
year. Working on the AB 86, Adult Education project program. The first report for that grant is due
on July 31st.
o
Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:
1) Kid’s College 2014: In progress.
o
Small Business Development Center – Laura Garinger:
1) Star Van Buren began the NxLevel training workshops at Terminal Island Prison on July 22nd. The
workshops consist of 10 sessions (twice a week for 5 weeks) for inmates that are soon to be
released. This will help those that are considering going into business for themselves and will give
them valuable entrepreneurship knowledge and they will complete a business plan when the
workshops are done.
2) Becki Walker, one of our experienced advisors, retired on June 30th. We are currently looking for a
well-rounded business advisor that is experienced in business start-ups, marketing and financial
analysis as well as business plans.
3) Star Van Buren is currently working on the proposal for our next year’s 2015 SBA grant. She is
also working on a proposal to receive additional funding from the Economic Development Office of
the Governor.
4) The SBDC continues to offer workshops to those that are starting a business and those that are in
business. Some of the workshops remaining for July are: The Small Business Orientation, The
Basics of Starting a Business and the Import Workshop, all offered on July 24th.
5) Nancy Cisneros and LauraLee Garinger attended the Connecting Women to Power Business
Conference on June 20th. We were able to secure a table right outside of the conference rooms
which allowed heavy traffic to our table. It was a tremendous networking opportunity and we had
many visitors sign up for the SBDC services. Dan Hancuff our legal advisor was a panel speaker in
one of the many workshops held that day and his speech on the services provided by the SBDC
was well received.
o

Discussion
1) New Developments: There’s about $50 million dollars coming down from the Chancellor’s Office and has to
be used for CTE programs. Right now, as it stands, 40% will be competitive and 60% will be allocated to the
2
colleges proportional to their CTE student count. There will be potentially money if we want to apply. There’s
another $250 Career Pathways trust coming down. Fiscally, it should be a good year. There’s another H1B
coming out for apprenticeships.
There are other federal grants for workforce development money that will be announced.
2) Annual Picnic: Let’s survey everybody and see the level of interest.
