to work out.

4) August 22nd – Team building workshops where they will be able to meet other MTT students,
meet instructors, officially enroll in class, take care of last minute paperwork regarding
financial aid and such.
5) Awesome mentor – Angel Martinez: Connects well with the students and he is amazing with
them.
o
Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:
1) Currently working on setting up the SpaceX Connector and Soldering Academy through the
H1B program. This will be 40 hours of training for people who may be employed at SpaceX.
We will be working through Pacific Gateway so they can recruit the people. It’s going to be
very extensive training with hopefully a job at the end.
2) Welding training for SpaceX engineers at Compton. This is for profit. Forty hours of training
and they have specific number of people they want to send for training.
3) This summer was the last round of WIP (Workforce Innovation Partnership grant). It ends in
November. It usually is only for summer classes in Machine Tool Technology for high school
students. This was the last round. There were three cohorts: one at Compton, one at ECC
and one at Cerritos. This has been one of our best performing grants. Every single
deliverable was not only achieved but it was surpassed.
4) We have two CACT grants where we help students in colleges and companies with
incumbent technical training.
5) We are still working on the Mentor Protégé that’s providing training for the manufacturing
company in Rialto.
6) Entered year 3 of the H1B grant.
o
Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:
1) Fall 2014 Catalog: PDF is online on the Community Education website. Flyers/catalogs have
been distributed during the last couple of weeks to EDD locations, libraries, senior centers,
etc. Printed versions distribution to households started last week.
1
2) Summer 2014 Kid’s College: Another successful Kid’s College has come to an end with
smoother operation at the drop-off/pick-up location, classrooms, etc. The classroom set-up in
Technical Arts (Grades 1-5) and Communications (Grades 6-12) continues to be the most
successful to ensure that the program runs smoothly. It allows us to respond in a timely
manner to all needs of students, parents and instructors.
3) Room reservations continue to be an issue. There has been an increase in issues with room
reservations as buildings are remodeled. Many times the different Divisions are hesitant in
giving us rooms or simply deny us access to any of their rooms and buildings.
o

Grants – Jennifer Hutcherson:
1) Industry and Technology is partnering with LA Trade Tech on a Proposition 39 Clean Energy
Workforce Program. This grant provides curriculum development, credential and certificates
to students and public equipment that will enhance students’ educational experience. The
SBDC submitted a Go-Biz application to fund business consultant services that assists small
businesses in obtaining access to capital. We are planning on applying for CTE
Enhancement Funds. That’s coming down from the Chancellor’s Office. That will go through
Industry and Technology. The Nursing Department received $171,000 for the Associate
Degree in Nursing Program from the Chancellor’s Office. They said the program was
awarded another $50,000 for continuing their program. The NSF ATE Asset Education for
Technology Grant that was delayed until next year. They wanted to give David time to
replace the partner that dropped out. Building Captains: right now it is Bobby and LauraLee.
LauraLee doesn’t want to do it any more and Bobby is moving out, so two people have to step
up to be Building Captains. Currently working on an annual report and a reference manual for
the Grants Office.

Denise DiPasquale: Doing Blueprint for Success program for two groups on Mondays and
Fridays; On Mondays I’m with the veterans over at the Inglewood Housing Facility for two hours
and I teach essentially the Blueprint for Workplace Success from the workbook. On Fridays, the
veterans come in and talk to me, work on their resumes and get job leads. In July, we got the
contract for the resume writing, interviewing and Mock Job Fair for the inmates at Terminal Island.
For the Mock Job Fair we had 17 participants and 17 interviewers. We had good comments at
the end.
Discussion
1) New Grants: We’re going to have a Round 2 of Career Pathways Trust Grant which is $250 million, so
we plan on going after some more grants with partners. There’s also the $50 million CTE Enhancement.
Basically these funds have to be invested in the CTE program. We will help Stephanie and Rodney
access some of those dollars. They can be used for equipment, curriculum development and
professional development. The big one is the new WIOA, which is the WIA reauthorization, the money
that goes to the WIBs. That piece of legislation was signed last month and with it comes a lot more grant
opportunities, kind of like TAACT.
2) New Developments: Classified/Faculty/Manager contracts were all approved by the Board.
