Department Updates
o
Career Pathways – Richard Gonzalez:
1) Career Pathways: We have a new casual with us, Tiffany Miller. She comes from YouthBuild. Her
strengths are grant management, recruiting, and concurrent enrollment for our high schools. During
Bridge Week they invite all incoming 9th graders on campus to introduce them to the different
aspects of campus life. They asked us to come out, meet the 9th graders and start setting them up
for concurrent enrollment before the school year started. We do have schools that we’re trying to
get into the program; they include North High and South High in Torrance and also El Segundo.
2) The Teacher Pipeline: We’re still hiring students for the STEM Teacher Program in classes as
teacher’s assistants at ECC and at the high schools. We have open orientation for the campus so
that individuals can come in and sign up.
3) The Career Advancement Academy (CAA): We had a little bumpy start. We have MTT (Machine
Tool Technology) and ACR (Air Conditioning Repair) at Compton. Shanta Pittman is doing the
recruitment at Compton. At El Camino we are busy recruiting. Welding looks like it will be full but
Air Conditioning Repair is proving difficult to fill.
4) AMETLL: Career Ladders: The South Bay Workforce Investment Board is providing integrated
workforce training for our AMETLL teachers. We had four school districts that were involved and
came to campus. There were administrators from all the districts at this meeting and two
Superintendents, one from Centinela Valley Unified School District and one from El Segundo
Unified School District.
5) We had the Manufacturing Pathways Mapping training. It went very well. At the next one we want
to get more faculty involved.
6) At DaVinci High School we are going to start an Architectural and Design Pathway. That’s
something that is being offered in addition to the Engineering and Technology Pathway.
o
Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:
1) The Fasteners program credit courses started on Monday, August 24th. The enrollment is low due
to a glitch in the system but Admissions is working on it.
2) We have two more Harness Technician training cohorts left in the year in September and October.
We will hold 2 weeks of hands on training and 2 weeks of certification training each month.
3) Trainees from the last cohort are applying for jobs and interviewing.
4) We are still working with the funding agency to extend the H1-B Grant for one more year.
5) We are currently working with Orbital to create a training plan for year 3 of the Mentor Protégé
grant. Next year will be the last year of the grant.
o
Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: (not in attendance):
1) Kid’s College 2015: Overall positive response from parents, kids and instructors. Income
generated was up slightly from 2014 Kid’s College. Top classes for 2015 included our new video
game designing/programming classes: Game Designer: Design & Code Your Own Video Game
(Grades 6-8) and Lil’ Game Designer: Computer Programming (Grades 3-5). Disruption of Kid’s
College at the drop-off/ pickup location and at the grades 1-5 classroom locations occurred during
the last week due to the dismantling of the Technical Arts building: Loud noise made it difficult for
the instructors to teach. Parents and instructors expressed concern and dissatisfaction with regard
to the safety of the children.
2) Fall 2015 Catalog: Printed and distributed to homes, the campus and community organizations
during the last week of July.
3) Plus 50 Grant: Return to Learn article about our Plus 50 program was featured on the Life After 50
magazine website. We are anticipating an article in their print version of the magazine as well.

Discussion
a) College Update: The job positing for the Presidency closed. We’ll probably be seeing the finalist the
middle of September at forums. The person selected is going to the Board in October.
b) Construction on Campus: Community Education moved from the old Industry and Technology building
over to the bungalows. Construction is going to go on for a few years.
c) EWD Changes: There are a number of things going on. Chancellor Harris is conducting town hall
meetings on some changes that he’s proposing through the BOG Taskforce on Workforce and the
Economy. During the last 9 months they have held convenings where they listen to the community
regarding what should be done with CTE and other economic development programs. They’ve come
up with 25 recommendations.
Other Issues
a) Employment Packets: Human Resources has included additional forms in the employment packets for
Casual employees. They include Notice of Exclusion From CalPERS Membership, Member Reciprocal
Self-Certification Form and Employee Retirement Information Form.
HR is saying that the forms for the packets are on-line and can be completed by individuals and
submitted directly to them via e-mail. They will provide the form for the LiveScan. They can then
provide copies for our files when the hiring process has been completed.
