A subject is the main noun of the sentence and what completes the action in the sentence. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. A verb is the action in the sentence, or what the subject is doing. A verb may express a state of being using a to be verb, like is, am, was, were, are. There are two types of subject complements: predicate nouns and predicate adjectives. A predicate noun defines or renames the subject. That dance is a waltz. A predicate verb describes the subject.
