ART 202 is a chronological study of Western art and architecture from the Renaissance

with a cultural and historical framework.
 Understand how art has reflected and/or influenced social, economic, religious, and
technological developments in different cultures.
 Analyze the formal (medium, composition, space, color, line, texture, figure style,
etc.) and expressive elements of works of art.
 Discuss artistic materials and techniques.
 Understand and apply art-related concepts and terminology.

Synopsis of Assignments:
 Quizzes: quizzes consist of slide identifications (artist, title, stylistic period, and
country of origin) and a short essay question that allows you to demonstrate your
knowledge of art terms, appropriate historical context, and information about the
specific artwork. A “Study Guide,” consisting of a list of images, will be attached
to my website (www.csub.edu/~rweller) prior to quizzes and exams.
 Exams: same format as a quiz, but with more advanced essay questions and at
least one comparison.
 Writing Assignment: a formal analysis of two images, which will be attached to
the website later this quarter. A guideline to help you with this analysis will also
be provided. The papers are to be 4-5 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12-point font,
1 inch margins.
 In-class Work: there will be several opportunities during this quarter to
demonstrate “active viewing,” whereby students analyze works of art in class.
There are no makeups.
Attendance: Attendance is crucial to your understanding of the material since missed
slide lectures, discussions, and in-class work cannot be made up and images that are not
in your textbook will be presented in class. Remember to contact me regarding any
absences.
Late Paper/Missed Exam Policy: Papers must be turned in on time. They will be
docked one letter grade (the equivalent of 10 points) per day until I receive it, including
Saturday and Sunday. If you fail to turn in your paper on the due date, contact me
immediately. There are no makeup quizzes or exams. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
