The 2nd Annual Greek Drama Festival
Attention citizens!
You and your compatriots have been chosen to take part in the 2ND ANNUAL GREEK
DRAMA FESTIVAL! Our contest will take place on Friday, Sept. 25th, and the winning team
will receive HONOR, GLORY, and a TEAM HOMEWORK PASS.
Read on, fair citizens, for details of this dramatic WRITING and ACTING competition!
Team task: plan, write, practice, and perform a scene based on events and characters from the
play Antigone by Sophocles. Your scene must be 4-5 MINUTES LONG FOR FULL CREDIT.
Every team member must have a part in your scene; some can be non-speaking parts. Every
team member needs at least one prop, a name tag, and some degree of costuming. EACH TEAM
will receive 150 POINTS for their praiseworthy performance.
Choose ONE of the following options:
Alternate ending: Rewrite the last scene of the play to reflect how you think it SHOULD have ended.
Your scene will need: a title, character parts for all group members, a script that includes original
dialogue and at least 5 lines of dialogue from the play, props, and at least minimal costuming.
Modernize a scene: What would change if this play were set in a different time period? Translate the
characters’ personalities and statuses into their present-day equivalents! Your scene will need: a title,
character parts for all group members, a script that includes original dialogue and at least 5 lines of
dialogue from the play, props, and at least minimal costuming.
Genre Makeover: Imagine this play as a kung fu movie, an anime, a musical, a western, or a crime
drama. Choose one long scene to perform in this style, OR perform one short scene in 2 or 3 genres.

dialogue and at least 5 lines of dialogue from the play, props, and at least minimal costuming.
Jerry Springer Episode: Imagine the characters from Antigone went on a daytime talk show. What
would be the theme of the show and what crazy drama would ensue? Your scene will need: a title,
character parts for all group members, a script that includes original dialogue and at least 5 lines of
dialogue from the play, props, and at least minimal costuming.
Deleted Scenes: What scene or scenes didn’t appear on the stage but should have? Choose either 1
longer scene or up to 3 short scenes to bring to life on stage. Your scene(s) will need: a title, character
parts for all group members, a script that includes original dialogue and at least 5 lines of dialogue from
the play, props, and at least minimal costuming.

Greek Drama Festival: Individual Task
Individual Assignment: Choose ONE of the following tasks, worth 150 points. Your task will be part of
your group’s dramatic performance on at the 2ND ANNUAL GREEK DRAMA FESTIVAL. Scripts are due
Wednesday, Sept. 16. All materials are due by the day of the dress rehearsal, Thursday, Sept. 24.
Mask Maker: Create masks for all of the characters in your performance. Your masks must clearly
represent the characters’ personality, gender, and status. Quality and effort count for full credit.
Costume Designer: Your job is to determine what props and costume accessories are needed for each
team member and gather these on or before the day of the play. Each team member needs one prop,
one accessory, and a name tag! A list of your props and costume items is due on Friday, Sept. 18.
Set Designer: Your job is to show the setting of the play through large paper backgrounds. Remember,
creativity and neatness count! You may also help plan the movement of actors across the stage.
Literary Coach: You will assist the playwright in finding 5 lines from the play to include in your script.
Write each line on an index card, along with stage directions for how it should be said. You will also be
the voice coach who helps the actors to deliver the lines with the appropriate emotional intensity.
Playwright: Though writing the script will be a group project, you will be the main author taking charge
of the writing process. You, as the playwright, are eligible for the coveted prize THE GOLDEN FIG LEAF!
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
One clever playwright will receive the special honor of the GOLDEN FIG LEAF. This award
will be chosen BY THE STUDENTS for the writer(s) with the best script!
One student with exceptional ARTISTRY may be chosen to receive the MEDAL of ATHENA.
Finally, your group may be honored with the GREEK HOPLIGHT AWARD for teamwork.
REMEMBER: THE TEAM NEEDS YOU! Slackers will be given an Alternate Assignment.
