El Camino College ASSOCIATED STUDENTS ORGANIZATION Senate Meeting Minutes Thursday, August 31, 2006 1:00 p.m. – Decathlon Room I. CALLTO ORDER L. Ramirez called the meeting to order at 1:05 p.m. II. ROLL CALL Executive Cabinet ◊ Present: David Nordel, Luis Ramirez, Soheil Sima, Kelvin Lee, Julian Peters, Habab Budri. ◊ Not Present: Ayorinde Aribatise Senators ◊ Present: Jesse Galdamez, Danielle Marquez, Saad Husain, Ashley Bachman, Evan Ortega, Roxanna Seyedin, Sean Eggers ◊ Not Present: Patricia Servin Advisors ◊ Present: Harold Tyler, Janice Watanabe ◊ Not Present: Jeannine Barba Guests ◊ Christina Jack, Yazmin Santana, Umera Ameen, Brandon Matson, Alex Gorney, Alejandro Ruiz, Nehasi Ronald Lee, Jana Lampkins III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA D. Nordel: Moved to amend the agenda so that Public Comment be placed above all other items. The motion was seconded by S. Eggers. The motion passed. D. Nordel: Moved to add the September 30th Leadership conference as discussion item 5.1. The motion was seconded by A. Bachman. The motion passed. IV. PUBLIC COMMENT N. Lee: Student from El Camino College Compton Community Educational Center who attended the July 24, 2006 El Camino Community College Board of Trustees meeting. N. Lee Presented J. Peters and D. Nordel with medals in appreciation of their efforts in support of the partnership between El Camino and Compton Community Educational Center. Also suggested a name change for the Compton Center and spoke about former student Charles Leone. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS (5.1) Finance ASO Administrative Assistant: D. Nordel moved to refer the hiring of Jana Lampkins as ASO Administrative Assistant to the Finance Committee. The motion was seconded by J. Peters. The Administrative Assistant would work up to 10 hours a week at $8 per hour. The annual budget for the Administrative Assistant would be up to $2,500. The duties of the Administrative Assistant would include, but would not be limited to taking the minutes for ASO meetings, filing, and taking phone messages. Office hours for the Administrative Assistant would be established. The motion passed. VII. REPORTS (6.1) Executive Cabinet Reports D. Nordel: ◊ This week ASO had a coffee and doughnut sale where many ASO applications were distributed. ◊ Students are needed as representatives for committees dealing with the accreditation process. ◊ The California Community College Student Affairs Association (CCCSAA) annual leadership conference will be held in Los Angeles this fall. ◊ ASO will hold Student Leadership Workshops on September 30th for El Camino and Compton Community Educational Center student leaders. Dr. Jeff Marsee and Dr. John Baker are scheduled to speak. ◊ New Student Orientation on August 23rd was successful. (6.2) Senator Reports D. Marquez: ◊ ASO has been asked to sponsor ten students to attend a pop culture conference that will be held in Los Angeles. (6.3) Advisor Reports J. Watanabe: ◊ ASO Advisor Jeannine Barba teaches Communications 1ABCD, a two unit student leadership class. Credit for the class can be earned by attending ASO meetings. ◊ All ASO members must purchase an ASB sticker every semester. H. Tyler: ◊ Voter registration forms were distributed and ASO members were encouraged to register to vote in time for the November elections. ◊ September 17th is Constitution Day. Schools are being encouraged to hold an informational campus activity involving the United States and California Constitutions. ◊ ASO is recognized as Student Learning Outcome (SLO). ◊ Student Leadership Workshops will be held on September 30th at El Camino. (6.4) Committee Reports Inter Club Council (ICC) Report – J. Watanabe: ◊ The first ICC meeting will be held Wednesday, September 6 at 12:00 in the Stadium Room. ◊ ICC is sponsoring Club Rush which will be held from Monday, September 11 to Thursday, September 14. Management Committee – H. Tyler: ◊ Student enrollment fell by approximately 500 seats. VII. ADJOURNMENT K. Lee moved to adjourn the meeting. A. Bachman seconded the motion. The motion passed.
