5634 version 4 Page 1 of 3 Demonstrate knowledge of workplace health and safety in the wood manufacturing industries Level 2 Credits 3 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of: the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; industrial site hazard control, and the elements of a health and safety programme in a wood manufacturing industry. This unit standard is designed for people who are, or wish to be, involved in the wood manufacturing industries and aims to enhance their knowledge of the principles of workplace health and safety. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and industrial site hazard control. Performance criteria 1.1 Principles of the Health and Safety in Employment Act are outlined in terms of the duties of employers and employees, employee involvement, and minimum standards for hazards. 1.2 Principles of industrial site hazard control are described in terms of safe work procedures, the protection of employees, and the elimination or minimising of hazards through substitution of process or product, or engineering redesign. Element 2 Demonstrate knowledge of the elements of a health and safety programme in a wood manufacturing industry. Performance criteria 2.1 Elements of a policy statement for a health and safety programme are outlined in relation to objectives, organisation’s philosophy, responsibilities, and consequences of non-performance. 2.2 Guidelines for establishing health and safety regulations on a site are outlined in terms of consultative formulation, clear and positive language, explanation of reasons, enforceability, and written copies. 2.3 Items to be included in the guidelines for reporting and investigating accidents are described in terms of report content, method, frequency, author, investigator training, incidents to be investigated, summaries, and statistics. 2.4 Roles and responsibilities of health and safety representatives as described in the legislation are explained. Please note Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP).
