Purpose
This unit standard is intended for use in the training and assessment of
industrial measurement and control technicians beyond the knowledge and
skills included in the National Certificate in Industrial Measurement and
Control (Level 4) [Ref: 0410]. Candidates who have achieved this unit
standard can apply their knowledge in a practical application.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate and apply
knowledge of the:
– operation of an industrial process; and
– measurement and control of an industrial process.

Definition
Industry practice – those practices that competent practitioners within the industry
recognise as current industry best practice.

It is recommended that assessment be based on:
a a report produced by the candidate, based on work experience on an actual
industrial process; and
b discussions with the assessor relating to the industrial process.

All activities and evidence presented for all elements and performance criteria in this
unit standard must be in accordance with legislation, standards, industry practice;
and where appropriate, manufacturers’ instructions, specifications, and data sheets.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the operation of an industrial process.
Performance criteria
1.1
Operation of the process is described in terms of inputs, outputs, and changes
to materials and energy.
1.2
Dynamic effects associated with the process are applied to a practical
application.
Range
1.3
transfer and distance/velocity lags, process gain, non-linearity,
noise, disturbances.
Health, safety, and plant protection issues are investigated and addressed.
Range
severity and probability of hazards, statutory protection required.
Element 2
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the measurement and control of an industrial
process.
Performance criteria
2.1
The measurement and control scheme for the process is described.
2.2
References to process measurements and controls required for plant safety are
described.

References to process measurements required for effective plant operation are
described.
2.4
Factors affecting overall plant performance and operation are described, and
recommendations for improvement where identified are outlined.

Applicable codes of practice are identified and described.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
