NZQA Expiring unit standard 3135 version 8 Page 1 of 3 Title Process sliver or top in a backwash Level 3 Credits 6 Purpose This unit standard is for people working in top making or semiworsted processing. People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the function and operation of a backwash; setup and operate the backwash to produce product to specification; explain and carry out chemical processes and chemical handling procedures; and maintain a clean machine and work area. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of processing carried out in a backwash. Evidence requirements 1.1 Backwash sections are described in terms of their function and operation. Range 1.2 Backwash chemical treatments are described in terms of treatment method and reasons for treatment. Range 1.3 creel, bowls, dryer, chemical addition. insect resist, chlorination, resin application, softening, bleaching, pH control. Liquor and chemical discharge, and disposal procedures are described in terms of plant and local authority regulations. Outcome 2 Prepare chemicals for backwash processing. Evidence requirements 2.1 Chemicals are identified and confirmed with work instructions. 2.2 Chemicals are prepared according to workplace procedure, work instructions and plant safety requirements. 2.3 Chemicals batches prepared for stock are tested according to workplace requirement to confirm that batch meets specification. Outcome 3 Set up backwash for processing. Evidence requirements 3.1 Backwash is prepared for operation according to work instructions and plant procedure. Range sliver or top identified, creel loading and machine thread up, feed rate, bowl conditions, squeeze press operation, dryer conditions, initial chemical charges, chemical addition controls, liquor flows. Outcome 4 Process and monitor sliver during backwash processing. Evidence requirements 4.1 Backwash and associated equipment is operated according to operating procedures, process and safety requirements. 4.2 Process conditions are monitored and maintained during processing according to process requirements and work instructions. 4.3 Samples are taken for testing according to process and work instructions. 4.4 Test results are assessed and machine and chemical adjustments made to achieve product quality. Outcome 5 Clean backwash and work area. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
