NZQA Expiring unit standard 5407 version 8 Page 1 of 3 Title Dry fabric using a conveyor dryer or a drum dryer Level 2 Purpose Credits 3 This unit standard is for people working in the dyeing and finishing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of a conveyor or drum dryer; prepare and use a conveyor or drum dryer to dry fabric; and carry out batch end procedures. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Textile Dyeing and Finishing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Competency can be demonstrated on a drum or conveyor dryer, depending on the type of dryer installed in the workplace. 2 Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 3 Definitions Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental, and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements. Product specifications refer to the document which accompanies each manufacturing order. This specifies all of the parameters for production of the yarn batch. This may include the fibre specification, the shade, dye bath parameters, machinery to be used, and finishing procedures. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of a conveyor or drum dryer. Evidence requirements 1.1 Dryer and related equipment are described in terms of function and operation. Outcome 2 Prepare and use a conveyor or drum dryer to dry fabric. Evidence requirements 2.1 Machine is clean and empty to prevent contamination. 2.2 Fabric is prepared and loaded according to product specifications. Range 2.3 Machine is prepared and operated according to workplace procedures. Range 2.4 fabric threaded, zone temperatures set, drum or conveyor speeds, safety devices and cut-out operational, instrumentation and control devices set. Machine is monitored during operation. Range 2.5 fabric identified, batches for processing gathered together, fabric orientation according to workplace procedures. maintain even fabric feed, feed blockages and tangles cleared, air filters remain clear, conveyor belt alignment maintained in a conveyor dryer, fabric checked for dryness at dryer exit. Records are maintained according to workplace procedures. Outcome 3 Carry out batch end procedures. Evidence requirements 3.1 Machine and work area are cleaned to prevent contamination. Range 3.2 filters, conveyor or drums, fibre build-up in dryer chamber. Any machine faults are reported according to workplace procedures. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
