People credited with this unit standard are able to select and apply mechanical tests to metal samples, and record and report test data for metal samples. Classification Steel Manufacturing > Steel Manufacturing - Supporting Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. 3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Select and apply mechanical tests to metal samples. Evidence requirements 1.1 Physical tests to be applied are identified in accordance with company documentation. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 1.2 9291 version 3 Page 2 of 3 Specific tests are selected to enable the required type of result at the required level of accuracy to be achieved. tests include but are not limited to – yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, total elongation, proof stress, reduction of area, R value,N value, Charpy impact test, Vickers hardness test, Rockwell hardness test, Brinell hardness test. Range 1.3 Test equipment is selected, checked, and operated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and/or company documentation. 1.4 Samples are taken, selected, and prepared in accordance with company documentation. 1.5 Tests are applied in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and/or company documentation. Outcome 2 Record and report test data for metal samples. Evidence requirements 2.1 Test results are interpreted to enable identification of any invalid test processes and allow corrective action to be taken in accordance with company documentation. 2.2 Test data are recorded and reported in accordance with company documentation. 2.3 Reporting action taken in the event of any out-of-specification test results enables isolation of the defective product in accordance with company documentation.
