NZQA registered unit standard 27716 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Instruct a Mind and Body class Level 3 Credits 7 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of Mind and Body as an exercise medium, and instruct a Mind and Body class. Classification Fitness > Group Fitness Instruction Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Exercise techniques refer to how exercise tasks are done, including the form the body takes when doing exercises. 2 Facility policy and procedure refers to the operations manual or documented normal operating procedures at a fitness facility. 3 All activities must be consistent with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 4 The candidate must be assessed instructing a class of at least five participants. Mind and Body classes may include but is not limited to – Yoga, Tai chi, Pilates; a minimum of one is required. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of Mind and Body as an exercise medium. Evidence requirements 1.1 The underlying philosophy of Mind and Body as an exercise medium is described in terms of stretches and breathing. Range relaxation, energy building, well-being, good health, range of motion, balance, stress reduction. Range 1.3 a minimum of 10 Mind and Body exercises are required; benefits include but are not limited to – energy, joints and organs, flexibility and mobility of spine. Health and safety requirements are described and implemented in terms of facility policy and procedure. Methods with which to screen participants, and contra-indications to look for are implemented according to facility policy and procedure. Range pre-exercise screen. Outcome 2 Instruct a Mind and Body class. Evidence requirements 2.1 The principles used in a Mind and Body class are described and safely and effectively demonstrated through instruction in accordance with the class plan. Range 2.2 Exercise techniques are described and safely and effectively demonstrated through instruction in accordance with the class plan. Range 2.3 base movements, name of exercise, correct technique, joints and muscles targeted, flow of movements. Observation of individual participants and corrections of technique are described and safely and effectively demonstrated in accordance with the class plan. Range 2.4 coordination, control, concentration, the breath, precise movements, technique, class structure. physical or verbal adjustment, on stage, off-stage. Exercise modifications are described and safely and effectively communicated in accordance with the class plan. Range correct posture, range of movements, stretching without compromising posture, cueing to following breathing.
