People credited with this unit standard are able to fell selected trees and prepare logs for extraction by helicopter; and prepare log turns for extraction by helicopter. Recommended skills and knowledge Recommended: Unit 19761, Demonstrate knowledge of helicopter logging. Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard must be assessed on-job. 2 Definitions Accepted industry practice – approved codes of practice and standardised procedures accepted by the wider forestry industry as examples of best practice. Worksite procedures – documented procedures used by the organisation carrying out the work and applicable to the tasks being carried out. They may include but are not limited to – standard operating procedures, site safety procedures, equipment operating procedures, quality assurance procedures, housekeeping standards, procedures to comply with legislative and local body requirements. 3 Helicopter logging operations are subject to the provisions of the Civil Aviation Rules (see http://www.caa.govt.nz) in accordance with the Civil Aviation Act 1990 and any subsequent amendments. Evidence requirements 1.1 Hazards in and around the area from which trees are to be harvested are managed in accordance with accepted industry practice. 1.2 Trees selected and marked for harvest are felled in accordance with accepted industry practice. Range minimising breakage, minimising residual stand damage. 1.3 Grapple or strop points are clearly marked and cleared in accordance with the worksite procedures. 1.4 Logs are cut and prepared for extraction in accordance with accepted industry practice. Range 1.5 complete cross-cuts made, logs checked for limbs concealed under logs and/or slash. Dead spars and other identified overhead hazards are felled or cleared prior to extraction of the logs. Outcome 2 Prepare log turns for extraction by helicopter. Evidence requirements 2.1 Strops are set in accordance with accepted industry practice. 2.2 Communication equipment is tested and communication with the pilot established in accordance with accepted industry practice. 2.3 Communications used are clear and concise and in accordance with accepted industry practice. 2.4 The helicopter is called in using the clock method to guide the pilot in accordance with accepted industry practice. 2.5 Each turn is stropped or grappled according to helicopter capacity and prevailing conditions accepted industry practice. Range 2.6 wind, temperature, topography, altitude. Logs aborted during extraction operations are recut or repositioned in accordance with accepted industry practice.
