NZQA registered unit standard 8331 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of the manufacture of direct reduced iron Level 3 Credits Purpose 4 This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: direct reduced iron (DRI) manufacturing methods; DRI manufacturing processes; and the measurement of performance in DRI manufacture. Classification Steel Manufacturing > Steel Manufacturing - Supporting Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes Definitions Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process. DRI refers to direct reduced iron. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of DRI manufacturing methods. Evidence requirements 1.1 The characteristics of DRI manufacturing methods are described in terms of their use, application, and operation. Range 1.2 manufacturing methods include but are not limited to – multihearth furnaces, kilns. Service support systems are explained in terms of the function and interrelationship with each other. Range Competenz SSB Code 101571 service support systems include but are not limited to – electrical, process computing, data capture, water, effluent treatment, gases, sampling. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 1.3 The characteristics of DRI manufacturing ancillary equipment are described in terms of company documentation. Range 1.4 8331 version 3 Page 2 of 3 ancillary equipment includes but is not limited to – materials handling, fume and off gas extraction, process monitoring. The characteristics of refractories used in DRI manufacture are described in terms of their function and application. Range refractories include but are not limited to – multihearth furnaces, kilns, inlet zones, discharge zones. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of DRI manufacturing processes. Evidence requirements 2.1 The characteristics of DRI manufacturing processes are described in terms of company documentation. Range DRI manufacturing processes include but are not limited to – raw materials, kiln, multihearth furnace, reduced primary concentrate and char chemistry. Outcome 3 Demonstrate knowledge of the measurement of performance in DRI manufacture. Evidence requirements 3.1 The application and implications of performance indicators are identified and described in terms of company documentation. Range 3.2 performance indicators may include but are not limited to – metallization, operating time, feed rate, coal to ironsand ratio; evidence of three is required. The identity, application, and effect of quality control factors for DRI manufacturing are described in terms of company documentation. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
