Classification Seafood > Seafood Generic Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation which applies to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Fisheries Act 1996, and associated regulations. 2 Definitions Conversion factors are factors applied for the purpose of converting the weight of processed fish to greenweight (the weight of the fish before processing or removal of any part), for the purposes of Quota Management. Company requirements refer to documented or undocumented procedures for the determination of production conversion factors issued by the candidates’ employer. Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) conversion factors, are those from the Fisheries (Conversion Factors) Notice 2005, and subsequent gazetted amendments. Production conversion factor is the conversion being produced by a seafood processing process. State refers to the definition in the Fisheries (Reporting) Regulations 2001 and the Fisheries (Conversion Factors) Notice 2005. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Explain how conversion factors are used in the New Zealand Quota Management System. Evidence requirements 1.1 The explanation includes the purpose of conversion factors in terms of quota management. Range includes but is not limited to – sustainable management of the fishery, the allocation of fishery resources, the reporting of the use of fishery resources. Primary Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 24087 version 2 Page 2 of 3 1.2 The explanation includes the application of conversion factors to processed states of seafood. 1.3 The explanation relates the conversion factors to the species of seafood, in accordance with the MPI conversion factors. 1.4 The explanation includes the importance of ensuring that the correct conversion factor is applied according to the way in which the fish or fish products have been produced. 1.5 The explanation illustrates the use of conversion factors by using calculations to produce greenweight from processed weights of seafood in accordance with the MPI conversion factors. Outcome 2 Measure the production conversion factor of a seafood processing system. Evidence requirements 2.1 The mass of seafood product is measured before and after processing in accordance with company requirements. 2.2 The production conversion factor is calculated in accordance with company requirements. 2.3 The production conversion factor is compared with the MPI conversion factor in accordance with the species and state of the seafood product.
