Definitions
Company requirements include the policy, procedures, and methodologies of the
company. They include requirements documented in company and site health and
safety plans, quality assurance documents, and contract work programmes;
Site procedures refer to the procedures which are required to be observed for safe
work practices at a particular site;
Job specifications refer to the documented information found in construction
drawings, project specification documents, legislation, regulations, and codes;
Manufacturers’ recommendations refer to product information and product data
sheets provided by the manufacturer of any given product.

This unit standard applies to both new roof and re-roofing installations.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Measure, mark, and cut part tiles for roof terminations.
Performance criteria
1.1
Hand and portable power tools are selected and used to achieve specified
results without damage to the material, injury to the operator, or danger to
others, in accordance with the tile manufacturer’s recommendations and
company requirements.
1.2
Tools used are maintained in an effective and efficient condition in accordance
with the manufacturer’s recommendations and company requirements.
1.3
Measurements taken and lines established for marking part tiles for cutting at
roof surface terminations ensure that the roof finish line is in accordance with
the job sheet and job specifications.
1.4
Cutting or drilling procedures adopted ensure work is not undertaken on a wet
roof.
1.5
Residue left from cutting or drilling on the roof is washed off on completion of
the work in accordance with site procedures.
1.6
The condition of flashings or valley trays are preserved during in situ cutting in
accordance with company requirements.
Element 2
Fix vermin proofing and part tiles to roof surface terminations.
Performance criteria
2.1
Vermin proofing is installed to the requirements of NZS 4206:1992 before tiling
of roof terminations is undertaken.

2.2
Part tile fixing patterns are in accordance with the requirements of NZS
4206:1992.
2.3
Fixings are installed to the requirements of NZS 4206:1992 in accordance with
company requirements.
Element 3
Remove all tile debris from roof.
Performance criteria
3.1
Tiling debris is removed from gutters, valleys, and roof surfaces in accordance
with site procedures.
3.2
Surplus material is removed, and roof and site are left in a condition which
enables further work to be carried out, in accordance with company
requirements.
Element 4
Maintain a safe working environment.
Performance criteria
4.1
Work practices are carried out without injury to people or damage to equipment,
building, or plant, in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes, health and
safety in employment guidelines, and company requirements.
4.2
Personal protective equipment for the task at hand is selected and worn in
accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and site procedures.
Range
includes but is not limited to – hard hat, sunblock, ear muffs, safety
glasses, gloves, knee pads, high visibility clothing, safety harness.
4.3
Work area is cordoned off and safety notices and notification of work signs are
distributed and erected, in accordance with site procedures.
4.4
Work area is kept clear of debris and unnecessary items in accordance with site
procedures.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
