Purpose
This unit standard is for people working as corrections officers in a prison and
covers the management of unit control room activity.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
–
provide visitor reception services in a prison;
–
monitor and operate security equipment and systems in a prison;
–
receipt and allocate goods in a prison;
–
coordinate staff work allocations in a prison;
–
coordinate prisoner movements in a prison; and
–
maintain prison unit control room documentation in a prison.

Reference to terms, procedures and specifications in this unit standard includes
documented procedures and specifications relevant to the workplace in which
assessment is carried out.

All work practices shall meet documented enterprise quality management
requirements, including the documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

This unit standard includes unit guardrooms and control rooms, commonly found in
the 60 and 80 bed units where the corrections officer controls the wing or unit.

Assessment should be against the documented national policies and procedures and
prison specific procedures.

Assessment against performance criterion 2.5 can be in a simulated situation.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Provide visitor reception services in a prison.
Range
visitor reception, passes, visitor books, phone calls, prison access,
communication systems, log book.
Performance criteria
1.1
Access to a prison is monitored and controlled in accordance with the
Corrections Act 2004 and established prison policy and procedures.
1.2
Individuals not allowed in a prison are identified and entry refused in
accordance with established prison policy and procedures.
1.3
Reception services provided meet all health, safety and security requirements in
accordance with legislative, and organisation requirements.
1.4
Visitor escorts are arranged and coordinated in accordance with established
prison policy and procedures.
1.5
Visitor passes are issued and visitors made aware of requirements in
accordance with established prison policy and procedures.

1.6
All visitor numbers are accounted for at all times as per established prison
policy and procedures.
Element 2
Monitor and operate security equipment and systems in a prison.
Range

phones, handcuffs, communication equipment, coordinate emergency

Performance criteria
2.1
Control room is secured at all times in accordance with established policy and
procedures.
2.2
Security equipment and systems are monitored, operated and maintained in
accordance with manufacturer's specifications and established procedures.
2.3
Key press is secured at all times and all keys are accounted for in accordance
with established policy and procedures and prison orders.
2.4
Keys are allocated to authorised persons in accordance with established policy
and procedures and prison orders.

2.5

Emergency situations are coordinated in accordance with the business
continuity plan incorporating emergency plans and procedures.
Element 3
Receipt and allocate goods in a prison.

3.1
All prisoner property and money are receipted, checked, and documented in
accordance with established prison policy and procedures.
3.2
Prohibited items are identified and processed in accordance with established
prison policy and procedures.
Range
3.3
nationally prohibited items, locally prohibited items, disposal,
storage, confiscation, other agencies.
Received money is receipted, placed in envelope, and secured in drop safe in
accordance with established procedures.

3.4
Consumable goods are recorded and allocated as per operational and prison
requirements.
Element 4
Coordinate staff work allocations in a prison.
Range
prisoner supervision, rosters, musters, handovers, briefings, checks, parades,
security, safety.
Performance criteria
4.1
Work is allocated to officers in a manner that maintains prisoner, officer, and
prison safety and security.
4.2
Staff allocations enable scheduled duties and activities to be carried out within
established timeframes and to required standards.
4.3
Personnel are briefed on all situations that impact on their duties in a timeframe
which ensures safety and security is maintained.
4.4
Security breaches are identified and actions taken to contain breaches are
implemented in accordance with established procedures.
4.5
All shifts are covered as per roster and established procedures.
4.6
Status and location of corrections officers under supervision of officer are
known at all times.
Element 5
Coordinate prisoner movements in a prison.
Range

Performance criteria
5.1
Prisoner movements are coordinated with corrections officers in accordance
with established procedures and local operating requirements.
5.2
Status and location of prisoners are known at all times.
5.3
Prisoners are checked in and out of the unit in accordance with established
procedures.
5.4
Prisoner enquiries and requests are managed in accordance with established
procedures and case officer requirements.
5.5
Prisoner safety and security is maintained in accordance with all legal and
established operating requirements.

Element 6
Maintain prison unit control room documentation in a prison.
Range

in/out sheets.
Performance criteria
6.1
Recorded information is complete, concise, accurate, and legible.
6.2
Control room information is recorded in the required format and filed within
scheduled timeframe in accordance with established procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
