People credited with this unit standard, in the context of stage
production, are able to: demonstrate knowledge associated
with set design; develop set design concept; and create a
practical model of design concept.

Explanatory notes
1
The person seeking credit in this unit standard will be supplied with a design brief by
the director or tutor. The brief will be limited to performance text production
guidelines, venue, budget; but it should allow for creative input.

Respect for ownership of original ideas and cultural sensitivity underpin the learning
and teaching in this unit standard.

Definitions
Performance text refers to performance material which may include written, visual,
oral, or combination(s).
Theatre refers to performance space which may be within traditional theatre
structures or alternative venue.
Essential vocabulary refers to knowledge of terminology associated with theatre
production, which includes stage left, up stage, down stage, proscenium arch.
Problems refer to creative challenges and limitations contained in brief.
Agreed production idea is an agreement regarding ideas between at least the
designer and tutor/director.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments.
