Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to determine
when mediation is appropriate and demonstrate skills as a
mediator.

Explanatory notes
1
This unit standard is intended for people with skills in mediation with the focus being
on the process rather than any particular models for mediation.

It is intended that the skills required in both outcomes in this unit standard will be
demonstrated in real or simulated scenarios. Evidence of a minimum of three
scenarios of mediation is required.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Determine when mediation is appropriate.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Determination identifies that the information necessary to make the decision to
mediate is obtained.
1.2
Determination identifies that the decision to mediate is based on the suitability
of mediation in relation to both the dispute and the parties.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate skills as a mediator.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Demonstration shows ability to work with the mediation process as the dispute
moves through various stages.

outcome after the mediation.

Please note
Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or
an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Consent requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
