Classification Public Sector Services > Mediation Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Mediation is a process whereby the parties have the opportunity to resolve their own disputes and the role of the mediator is facilitative of the process, not the content. The mediator is independent with no personal interest in the dispute. 2 The understanding of conflict resolution is essential for the mediator’s understanding of sources of conflict. 3 Assessment for this unit standard includes – one theoretical perspective; and includes but is not limited to – individuals, collectives, organisations. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Explain the dynamics of conflict. Evidence requirements 1.1 Explanation identifies different perspectives from which parties may experience conflict. Range includes but is not limited to – intrapersonal, interpersonal, organisational. 1.2 Explanation establishes how origins of conflict influence disputes. 1.3 Explanation identifies the influence of conflict on the dispute. Evidence requirements 2.1 Explanation describes the effects different types of conflict have on the management of the mediation process. Range 2.2 different types of conflict include but are not limited to – individual, collective, organisational. Explanation establishes techniques which can be used to constructively address the effects of conflict in mediation. Range evidence is required of two techniques. Outcome 3 Identify external sources of conflicts from the wider socio-cultural context that impact on the mediation process. Range two sources. Evidence requirements 3.1 Sources of conflicts that exist in the wider socio-economic context that may impact on the meditation process are identified.
