Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the
dynamics of conflict; explain sources of conflict and their effects
on the mediation process; and identify external sources of
conflicts from the wider socio-cultural context that impact on the
mediation process.

Explanatory notes
1
Mediation is a process whereby the parties have the opportunity to resolve their own
disputes and the role of the mediator is facilitative of the process, not the content.
The mediator is independent with no personal interest in the dispute.

The understanding of conflict resolution is essential for the mediator’s understanding
of sources of conflict.

Assessment for this unit standard includes – one theoretical perspective; and
includes but is not limited to – individuals, collectives, organisations.

Explanation describes the effects different types of conflict have on the
management of the mediation process.
