People credited with this unit standard are able to plan fruit and vegetable crop research programmes, and establish and manage fruit and vegetable crop trials. They will also be able to complete and evaluate fruit and vegetable crop trials. Crops refers to any fruit and/or vegetable; Programmes refer to: long-term, short-term; trials; wide variation?, variety improvement, irrigation management, fertiliser, pest, weed control, fungicidal; coordinated. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Plan fruit and vegetable crop research programmes. Performance criteria 1.1 Fruit and vegetable crop research programmes are planned to take account of short-term objectives and long-term goals. 1.2 Planned fruit and vegetable crop research programmes are supportive of research continuity and build on previous research findings. 1.3 Resources required for fruit and vegetable crop research programmes are identified, authorised, and are allocated within a timeframe that optimises programme implementation. Range resources – physical, human, financial. 1.4 Design of fruit and vegetable crop research programme is accurate, complete, and includes field and factory trial design and methodologies. 1.5 Measurement criteria for fruit and vegetable crop research programmes are included in programme design. 1.6 Constraints to fruit and vegetable crop research programmes are identified, and solutions are developed to optimise performance. Range 1.7 constraints – climate; availability and/or performance of equipment, product, personnel budget. Interested parties supportive of fruit and vegetable crop research programmes are canvassed for complementary input and information. Range interested parties – internal and external customers; other research organisations, field departments, cooperative organisations: suppliers of pesticides, weed control products. Range policies and procedures – manuals and/or systems and procedures and/or quality standards. Element 2 Establish and manage fruit and vegetable crop trials. Performance criteria 2.1 Reason for fruit and vegetable crop trial is established, and is consistent with research programme design. 2.2 Fruit and vegetable crop trial is integrated with complementary internal and external research programmes. 2.3 Site selected for fruit and vegetable crop trial reflects realistic crop growth environment and causes minimal impact on trial host. Range 2.4 trial host – grower, sponsor, laboratory. Fruit and vegetable crop trial site is controlled and protects trial from accidental adverse influences. Range adverse influences – sprays of pesticides, fungicides and other chemicals outside control specifications; damage from vehicles, pests; unscheduled harvesting. 2.5 Fruit and vegetable crop trial is ecologically and environmentally sound and maximises output from given area of land. 2.6 Costs involved with running crop fruit and vegetable crop trial are minimised. 2.7 Potential problems in establishing and managing fruit and vegetable crop trials are identified, and solutions implemented optimise trial performance and results. Range 2.8 potential problems – weather, resources. Documentation related to establishment and management of fruit and vegetable crop trial is accurate and complete in accordance with organisational procedures. Range policies and procedures – systems and operating procedures and/or quality standards. Element 3 Complete and evaluate fruit and vegetable crop trials. Performance criteria 3.1 Fruit and vegetable crop trial crop is harvested in a quantity and at a time likely to produce meaningful results that are consistent with trial expectations. 3.2 Fruit and vegetable crop trial results are compared against known benchmarks, and results are recorded. 3.3 Evaluation of fruit and vegetable crop trial results is consistent with research programme design, and identifies research end point. 3.4 Fruit and vegetable crop trial results that are within defined parameters, statistically robust, and add value to overall research programme, are attained from trial within agreed timeframe. 3.5 Findings and recommendations from fruit and vegetable crop trial evaluation are complete, in agreed format, and communicated with interested parties within agreed timeframe. 3.6 Opportunities for improvement in design, implementation, and management of fruit and vegetable crop trials are identified, and actioned prior to next trial commencement. 3.7 Evaluation of fruit and vegetable crop trial complies with organisational policies, procedures, and legislation. Range policies and procedures – work instructions and/or manuals and/or operating procedures and/or quality standards. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
