People credited with this unit standard are able to: interpret company processing requirements; prepare processing chemicals; set up paddle machinery for operation; operate paddle machinery and process skins; describe the effects of incorrect leather paddle processing operations; describe processing stages preceding and following leather paddle machinery operations; demonstrate team-work; and comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements. Outcome 2 Prepare processing chemicals. Evidence requirements 2.1 Weighing and measuring equipment are prepared in accordance with company specifications. 2.2 Chemical types and quantities are determined from company formulations for the number and/or weight of skins and the types of processes required. 2.3 Chemical containers and handling equipment are cleaned and maintained to company specifications before and after use. 2.4 Chemicals are assembled, weighed, and measured, and placed in identified containers in accordance with company specifications and process formulations. 2.5 Storage and identification of chemical batches meets company specifications. 2.6 Any spillage and wastage of chemicals is minimised and spillages cleaned up in accordance with company and statutory specifications. 2.7 2.8 This unit standard is Chemical handling, bulk storage, and work area cleanliness meets company and statutory safety specifications. expiring Process control documentation is completed in accordance with company requirements. Outcome 4 Operate paddle machinery and process skins. Evidence requirements 4.1 Start-up, operation, monitoring, maintenance, shutdown, and cleaning of paddle machinery meet company requirements. 4.2 Chemicals are added to processing vessels in accordance with company specifications for the processes to be completed. 4.3 Skins are counted and/or weighed and placed in processing vessels in accordance with company tolerance specifications. 4.4 Handling techniques minimise operator injury and damage to skins. 4.5 Skins are submerged in processing liquid in accordance with company specifications. 4.6 This unit standard is Processes are monitoredexpiring and controlled in accordance with company specifications and process formulations. Outcome 5 Describe the effects of incorrect leather paddle processing operations. Evidence requirements 5.1 The effects of incorrect leather paddle processing operations are described in terms of the cost to the tannery. Range effects include but are not limited to – damage, requirements for rework, customer dissatisfaction, financial loss.
