People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for the installation of, install, and commission Type 2 gas appliances and equipment; work safely and with care; and demonstrate knowledge of regulatory requirements, selection of methods and materials, and underpinning concepts and principles, as applied to the installation and commissioning of Type 2 gas appliances and equipment. Any legislation, standard, or code superseding any of the above will apply, pending review of this unit standard. 2 Credit for this unit standard does not entitle the candidate to legally perform certain aspects of this work unless registered or supervised by a registered person under the provisions of the Electricity Act 1992. 3 Range two gas cooking appliances which may include but are not limited to – domestic and commercial ovens, ranges, grills, fryers, baking ovens, steam ovens; two space gas heating appliances; two central gas heating appliances; two gas water heating appliances which may include but are not limited to – continuous flow water heaters, storage water heaters, pool heaters, spa pool heaters, indirect heated water heaters, boilers. 4 This unit standard requires the application of theory as included in the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Regulations 1977. These Regulations are currently under review to align them with the newer Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006. 5 Definitions Job requirements refers to specific requirements of the job at hand not covered by job specifications. Job specifications, for the purpose of this unit standard, refers to instructions (oral, written, graphic) and may include any of the following: manufacturers’ instructions; design drawing detail specifications; specifications from a specialist source such as an architect, designer, engineer, or a supervisor; and site or work specific requirements. Where job specifications are in conflict with applicable legislation, standards, and/or codes, such legislation, standards, and/or codes shall take precedence for the purpose of assessment. Other services refers to any existing installed services. Type 2 refers to mains power supplied electrically controlled gas appliances generally below 250MJ per hour rated input. Regulatory requirements, for the purpose of this unit standard, refers to applicable legislation, standards, and codes. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 21893 version 1 Page 3 of 5 Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Prepare for the installation of Type 2 gas appliances and equipment. Performance criteria 1.1 Gas appliances, flues, and ventilation are selected in accordance with job specifications and NZS 5621:2003. 1.2 Location of gas appliances, flues, and ventilation is established in accordance with job specifications and NZS 5261:2003. Element 2 Install Type 2 gas appliances and equipment. Performance criteria 2.1 Gas appliances, flues, and ventilation are installed in accordance with job specifications. 2.2 As required, flashing is installed to ensure weathertightness in accordance with Clause E2 of the New Zealand Building Code and any related compliance documents. 2.3 Gas appliances and associated fittings are connected to gas supply connection points in accordance with job specifications. 2.4 Soundness tests are carried out in accordance with NZS 5261:2003. 2.5 The installation meets requirements of the Gas Regulations 1993. Element 3 Commission Type 2 gas appliances and equipment. Performance criteria 3.1 Gas appliance commissioning is carried out in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions. 3.2 Flues and ventilation are tested in accordance with NZS 5261:2003. Range 3.3 smoke test or draft gauge. Documentation is completed in accordance with job requirements. Range may include but is not limited to – gas certificates, guarantees, checklists. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 21893 version 1 Page 4 of 5 3.4 Appliance use is explained to the client in accordance with Gas Regulations 1993. Element 4 Work safely and with care. Performance criteria 4.1 Practical activities are carried out avoiding harm to people and damage to property, other services, materials, tools, and equipment. Element 5 Demonstrate knowledge of regulatory requirements, selection of methods and materials, and underpinning concepts and principles, as applied to the installation and commissioning of Type 2 gas appliances and equipment. Performance criteria 5.1 Applicable sections of legislation, standards, and codes are described in terms of their application to the installation and commissioning of Type 2 gas appliances and equipment. 5.2 Selection of methods and materials is justified. Range 5.3 job specifications, operation of the installed gas appliances and equipment; may include job requirements. Underpinning concepts and principles are explained in terms of their application to the installation and commissioning of Type 2 gas appliances and equipment. Range combustion, conduction, convection, dew point, heating value, latent heat, properties of gases, radiation, vaporisation. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
